LO2 Synthesis, Indicators and Information Gaps
Combine objective and subjective client information, recognise inconsistencies or gaps, obtain additional information and form defensible planning assumptions.
How to prepare for R06
Complete broad R01-R05 revision first, then use the two-week pre-release window to map each client’s facts, gaps, calculations and possible solutions before practising concise mark-led answers.
Core concepts
Concept 1
Synthesis connects income, expenditure, assets, liabilities, tax, family, employment, health, protection, pensions, investments, objectives and stated preferences.
Exam cue: Build a single client map rather than analysing each product or fact in isolation.
Concept 2
Subjective factors such as priorities, beliefs, confidence and behaviour must be reconciled with objective indicators such as cash flow, time horizon and capacity for loss.
Exam cue: Test whether stated behaviour and preferences are consistent with resources, constraints and objectives.
Concept 3
An inconsistency or gap should trigger a precise follow-up question, evidence request or cautious assumption before analysis proceeds.
Exam cue: State the missing fact, why it matters and which decision it could change.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Listing generic fact-find questions without linking them to the named client or task.
Guardrail: Do not reproduce generic R01-R05 facts, repeat case details without analysis or give an unquantified product name without client-specific justification.
Accepting every stated objective as simultaneously affordable and equally urgent.
Guardrail: Do not reproduce generic R01-R05 facts, repeat case details without analysis or give an unquantified product name without client-specific justification.
Turning uncertainty into an unsupported numerical or behavioural assumption.
Guardrail: Do not reproduce generic R01-R05 facts, repeat case details without analysis or give an unquantified product name without client-specific justification.
Memory anchors
Whole Client
Link household, cash flow, tax, risk, protection, pension and investment facts.
Fact–Feeling–Fit
Reconcile objective facts, subjective preferences and the required outcome.
Gap–Impact–Ask
Name the gap, explain its impact and ask for the precise information.
Priority Conflict
When objectives compete, compare urgency, consequence, timing and affordability.
Evidence Ladder
Use documents, calculations, client confirmation and cautious assumptions in that order.
No Generic Lists
Every requested fact should have a clear purpose in this client’s plan.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
