How to use this guide
How to prepare for R06
Complete broad R01-R05 revision first, then use the two-week pre-release window to map each client’s facts, gaps, calculations and possible solutions before practising concise mark-led answers.
1. Extract facts, objectives and gaps
Map household, business, cash flow, assets, debt, tax, risk, protection, pensions and investments, then separate facts from assumptions and missing information.
2. Quantify and compare
Calculate the current position or shortfall and compare client-specific advantages, disadvantages, tax, risk, cost, access and interaction.
3. Recommend and justify
State action, detail, amount or structure, reason and outcome, then disclose material risks, limitations and unresolved needs.
4. Implement and review
Sequence actions, identify parties and documents, select meaningful benchmarks and adapt the plan when circumstances or rules change.
LO1 Client Information, Needs, Values and Risk
Establish the client/adviser relationship and positive outcomes, clarify aims, needs, priorities and relevant vulnerability, then explain financial risks and the client’s risk profile.
Key rules
Rule 1
The client/adviser relationship requires a clear scope, roles, costs, services, regulatory disclosures and an approach that supports positive customer outcomes.
Exam cue: Separate a stated objective from an underlying need, preference, constraint or untested assumption.
Rule 2
Aims, objectives, needs, wants, values, priorities and current or potential vulnerabilities shape what the plan must achieve and how advice should be communicated.
Exam cue: Identify which fact affects risk tolerance, financial capacity, time horizon, accessibility or support.
Rule 3
Risk profiling combines attitude to risk, capacity for loss, knowledge and experience, time horizon, need for risk and the client’s ability to understand the implications.
Exam cue: For an additional-information task, ask only for facts that would change analysis or suitability.
Common traps
Repeating facts already supplied in the case study instead of identifying genuinely missing information.
Prevention: Do not reproduce generic R01-R05 facts, repeat case details without analysis or give an unquantified product name without client-specific justification.
Treating a risk questionnaire score as the whole risk profile or ignoring capacity for loss.
Prevention: Do not reproduce generic R01-R05 facts, repeat case details without analysis or give an unquantified product name without client-specific justification.
Using vulnerability labels or protected characteristics as assumptions rather than identifying the support or planning impact.
Prevention: Do not reproduce generic R01-R05 facts, repeat case details without analysis or give an unquantified product name without client-specific justification.

FAQ
Common CII R06 questions
Is this an official CII course or question bank?
No. This is an independent syllabus-mapped study guide. The live CII unit page, annual syllabus, sitting-specific case studies, examination guide and qualification updates control the assessment.
What is the R06 examination format?
It is a three-hour written examination worth 150 marks. Candidates answer short-answer questions based on two client case studies that are released two weeks before the examination.
Do the case studies change on the examination day?
No new or different case-study information is added. The same cases are supplied on-screen, but candidates cannot take their pre-released copy into the examination. The exam instructions focus the questions on identified client objectives.
Are the five learning outcomes assigned fixed marks?
No. The latest guide’s test specification maps each of the two case-study questions to all five outcomes. Each question part displays its marks, but the syllabus does not publish a fixed outcome-by-outcome split.
Which annual edition should I use?
Use the edition covering your sitting date. On 29 July 2026, examinations through 31 August 2026 use the 2025/2026 English-law and tax basis. The 2026/2027 syllabus applies only from 1 September 2026.
What changed in the 2026/2027 syllabus?
The five outcomes and assessment method remain stable. The next edition gives greater emphasis to positive and fair consumer outcomes, current or potential vulnerability, information gaps, weaknesses in existing provision and suitable recommendations that ensure good consumer outcomes.
Which technical units feed into R06?
R06 combines and applies R01 financial services, regulation and ethics; R02 investment principles and risk; R03 personal taxation; R04 pensions and retirement planning; and R05 financial protection.
What should be completed before the case studies are released?
Complete broad technical revision and practise fact finding, calculations, option comparison, recommendation justification, implementation and review. The two-week window is intended for applying that knowledge to the released client details.
How should the two-week pre-release period be used?
Map the clients’ circumstances and objectives, identify missing information and possible needs, revise likely technical areas, practise relevant calculations and compare possible solutions. Do not try to predict exact questions at the expense of understanding the whole case.
How detailed should an answer be?
Use the mark allocation and command verb to judge depth. Concise note form and short sentences are acceptable when each point is sufficiently detailed and applied to the client.
Must an answer match the model answer word for word?
No. CII states that the published model answers show full-mark responses but do not list every acceptable alternative. Technically correct and relevant alternatives can gain marks.
Can a calculator and tax tables be used?
The platform includes a calculator and candidates may use their own non-programmable calculator. CII tax tables are supplied in the portal, candidates may not use their own tax tables, and all calculation steps should be shown.
What is the latest examination guide linked by CII?
At the review date, the latest guide linked on the R06 unit page is the April 2026 Exam Guide, published in May 2026 for candidates preparing for the June 2026 sitting. The unit page currently lists no exam-guide correction.
Does passing R06 alone complete the Diploma?
No. R06 is the 30-credit application unit within a six-core-unit Diploma. The learner must satisfy the full CII qualification requirements and any applicable firm and regulatory competence requirements.
