How to prepare for the Flyer ID test

Start with aircraft weight, class and IDs, then apply the people, place, airspace and pre-flight rules to practical scenarios before rehearsing the 40-question format.

Core concepts

Concept 1

The CAA recommends allowing at least 30 minutes, imposes no fixed completion time while active and ends a session after more than 90 minutes of inactivity.

Exam cue: Distinguish recommended completion time from the inactivity cutoff.

Concept 2

A Flyer ID issued under the current rules lasts five years and renewal requires passing the test again.

Exam cue: Check the recorded expiry rather than assuming every existing ID has five years.

Concept 3

An older Flyer ID issued under previous regulations may last three years, so the holder should check the actual expiry in My registration.

Exam cue: Remember that passing proves basic competence but does not replace the duty to follow current rules on every flight.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Calling the test a strict 30-minute examination.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Assuming an inactive browser session remains open indefinitely.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Treating a valid ID as permission for any aircraft, place or operation.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Memory anchors

Allow 30 Minutes

The CAA recommends at least 30 minutes; this is not a fixed time limit.

Stay Active

The service allows flexible time but closes after more than 90 minutes of inactivity.

Five Years

Current Flyer IDs last five years.

Renew by Test

Pass the theory test again to renew.

Older ID

A Flyer ID issued under earlier rules may have a three-year validity.

ID Is Not Permission

Every flight still needs the correct aircraft, place, sub-category and safe operation.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.

Knowledge Check (after reading)

Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.

Check-up Questions

1-2 question checkpoint

How much time does the CAA suggest allowing for the test?

Is the current test subject to a fixed 30-minute completion limit?

Answer all questions to submit.
