Incident Reporting, Night Lighting and Insurance
Drone Code points 18-20. Serious incident or near-miss reporting, suspicious activity, forced-landed aircraft, green flashing lights and insurance thresholds.
How to prepare for the Flyer ID test
Start with aircraft weight, class and IDs, then apply the people, place, airspace and pre-flight rules to practical scenarios before rehearsing the 40-question format.
Core concepts
Concept 1
Serious incidents and near misses that endangered or could have endangered people, property or aircraft must be reported to the CAA.
Exam cue: Judge reporting from potential consequence as well as actual harm.
Concept 2
Night flight requires a green flashing light; any add-on light must be secure and included in aircraft weight.
Exam cue: Use police or airport security for suspicious activity while using the CAA process for reportable safety occurrences.
Concept 3
Third-party insurance is optional for recreational flying below 20kg but required for other uses and always required at 20kg or above.
Exam cue: Identify both aircraft weight and purpose before deciding insurance.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Skipping a near-miss report because no collision occurred.
Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.
Using a red or steady light at night instead of the specified green flashing light.
Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.
Assuming all sub-20kg flights are exempt from insurance.
Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.
Memory anchors
Report Risk
Report a serious incident or near miss that did or could have endangered people, property or aircraft.
Suspicious Activity
Call police on 101, or airport security when the activity is at an airport.
Private Property
Get the owner's permission before retrieving a forced-landed aircraft.
Night Light
Night flight requires a green flashing light on the aircraft.
Below 20kg Hobby
Third-party insurance is optional for fun, recreation, sport or hobby flying below 20kg.
Insurance Required
Non-recreational use below 20kg and every aircraft at 20kg or above require third-party insurance.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
