Operator Competence, Role Allocation, Maintenance and Renewal
Drone Code points 33-36. Checking flyer competence, defining responsibilities, safe maintenance, firmware and annual Operator ID renewal.
How to prepare for the Flyer ID test
Start with aircraft weight, class and IDs, then apply the people, place, airspace and pre-flight rules to practical scenarios before rehearsing the 40-question format.
Core concepts
Concept 1
The operator must make sure each remote pilot holds the required valid competence certificate for the intended flight.
Exam cue: Verify the flyer's certificate and the operation it covers before lending the aircraft.
Concept 2
When another person flies the aircraft, the operator should define the flyer's duties and the operator's maintenance, software and management responsibilities.
Exam cue: Write down role expectations in clubs, schools or organisations with several flyers.
Concept 3
The operator must maintain the aircraft safely, follow manufacturer instructions, keep firmware current and renew the Operator ID every year with accurate registration details.
Exam cue: Treat annual renewal and up-to-date details as separate from the five-year Flyer ID cycle.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Assuming a person who can physically fly the aircraft has the right competence.
Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.
Leaving firmware and maintenance responsibility undefined between owner and flyer.
Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.
Confusing the Operator ID one-year renewal with the Flyer ID five-year renewal.
Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.
Memory anchors

Follow manufacturer maintenance instructions and keep firmware current.
Operator Renewal
Renew the Operator ID every year.
Keep Details Current
Operator registration information must remain accurate between renewals.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
