Critical-analysis questions test whether candidates can identify claims, evidence, conclusions, assumptions, flaws, and the answer best supported by a passage.
Key rules
Rule 1
Every Reading answer must be supported by the supplied passage, table, graph, index, or reference entry; outside knowledge cannot repair a weak choice.
Exam cue: Return to the exact sentence, row, label, or relationship that can prove the choice.

Match the scope of the answer to the source: distinguish what is stated, reasonably implied, merely possible, or contradicted.
Exam cue: For tone and purpose, rely on the author's wording and selections rather than the topic alone.

Use structure, transitions, examples, comparison, and word context to identify how the source develops meaning.

Common CBEST questions
Is this the official CBEST?
No. These are original practice questions aligned to public CTC Exams and California Commission on Teacher Credentialing guidance. They are not copied from secure CBEST forms.
What sections are on the CBEST?
The official CBEST page lists three sections: Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. Candidates must pass all three sections to pass the CBEST.
Why is this mock 120 questions if the official CBEST has two essays?
This is a Pass Harbor skills mock inside a four-choice platform, not a literal official form. It combines the public Reading and Mathematics weightings with essay planning, organization, reasoning, revision, and conventions practice. The live Writing section requires two complete essays, so use this bank alongside timed writing.
Can I use a calculator on CBEST Mathematics?
No. The official CBEST page says calculator use is prohibited, so math practice should build mental arithmetic, estimation, and written-work fluency.
How long is each CBEST section?
The current official page lists 90 minutes for Reading, 120 minutes for Mathematics, and 90 minutes for Writing. The sections are administered in separate sessions and registered for separately.
How is CBEST passing status determined?
Each section is reported on a 20–80 scale, and 41 is the standard section passing score. A candidate may pass with a 37–40 on one or two sections if the three-section total is at least 123, but any section below 37 prevents passing status.
Do most California teacher candidates still need the CBEST?
Not necessarily. Beginning June 29, 2024, a qualifying bachelor's or higher degree satisfies the California Basic Skills Requirement for most credential paths. Some documents do not require a bachelor's degree, programs may set enrollment rules, and employers may have their own conditions, so confirm your path with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, your preparation program, or your employer before registering.
Does this practice bank use the exact official answer format?
No. Pass Harbor uses four-choice, one-best-answer practice so every item can be scored and explained consistently. Official public CBEST Reading and Mathematics practice materials use five-choice questions, and the live Writing section uses constructed responses.
How should I use the 601 questions?
Drill weak Reading and Mathematics factors first, then use the Writing questions to evaluate focus, organization, support, reasoning, revision, and conventions. Finish each study cycle by writing one full analytical essay and one full remembered-experience essay under the official 90-minute section limit.
