How to study WJEC GCSE Mathematics and Numeracy
Move from concept and notation to a justified method, show a complete mathematical chain, check scale and units, and interpret the answer in context.

Identify the unit, tier, calculator rule, given information, command word, required accuracy and any permitted formula.
2. Represent the mathematics
Choose a diagram, expression, equation, table, graph, proportion, probability model or statistical representation.
3. Select and execute a method
Use an efficient valid method, preserve exact values or sufficient precision, and make each transformation auditable.
4. Communicate and check
Show notation, units and a logical chain; estimate, substitute back, compare constraints or use an inverse operation to test the result.
5. Interpret and qualify
Answer the question in its original context, round in the required direction and explain any limitation or decision.

1.1 Number and rounding
Read, order, round and estimate numbers while matching the degree and direction of rounding to the problem.
Key rules
Rule 1
Read and write whole numbers and decimals using secure place value and directed-number order.
Exam cue: Confirm the unit, entered tier, calculator condition and available formula list before choosing a method.
Rule 2
Round to powers of ten, decimal places and significant figures.
Exam cue: State the requested accuracy and preserve enough digits in intermediate working before giving the final rounded value.
Rule 3
Estimate, check and decide whether a contextual answer must be rounded up or down.

Common traps
Rounding every decimal mechanically instead of responding to capacity, people, packs or other contextual constraints.
Prevention: Do not import the outgoing separate qualifications, assume a universal tier across units or ignore calculator, formula-list, context and accuracy conditions.
Assuming that every subpoint in a cross-unit strand appears in all three papers, rather than reading the correct matrix column.
Prevention: Read the precise subpoint in the applicable unit column; a cross-unit strand does not mean every subpoint appears in every paper.
Using a Higher-only method or expectation for a Foundation entry, or importing the outgoing Mathematics/Mathematics-Numeracy structure.
Prevention: Standard type applies to Foundation and Higher; bold specification additions are Higher-only. There is no Intermediate Tier.

Common WJEC GCSE Mathematics and Numeracy questions
Is this an official WJEC resource?
No. It is an independent guide aligned to WJEC's current public specification and teaching guidance. WJEC's live documents, entry information and examination instructions remain authoritative.
Which qualification does this guide cover?
It covers the Qualifications Wales-regulated WJEC GCSE Mathematics and Numeracy Double Award taught from September 2025: 3320QD in English or 3320CD in Welsh. It is for Wales and is not available to centres in England.
Is Mathematics and Numeracy one qualification or two?
The current Made-for-Wales route is one integrated Double Award qualification with three compulsory units. Do not substitute the outgoing separate GCSE Mathematics 3300QS and GCSE Mathematics-Numeracy 3310QS routes.
What does Unit 1 assess?
Unit 1, Financial Mathematics and Other Applications of Numeracy, is a calculator examination worth 30%. Higher is 105 minutes for 80 marks and Foundation is 90 minutes for 65 marks. Questions use personal and other real-world contexts.
What does Unit 2 assess?
Unit 2 is the non-calculator examination worth 30%. Higher is 105 minutes for 80 marks and Foundation is 90 minutes for 65 marks. It includes all probability and a significant proportion of geometry alongside other context-free and contextual mathematics.
What does Unit 3 assess?
Unit 3 is calculator-allowed and worth 40%. Higher is 120 minutes for 90 marks and Foundation is 105 minutes for 75 marks. It mixes contexts and includes most statistical data handling plus a significant proportion of measures.
Must the units be taken in a particular order?
No. All three units are compulsory, but WJEC prescribes no hierarchy or teaching order. Unit 1 and Unit 2 are first available in Summer 2026; Unit 3 and the first full award are first available in November 2026.
How do the tiers work?
Higher Tier makes A*-D available and Foundation Tier makes C-G available for a unit. A learner can use different tiers across Units 1, 2 and 3. There is no Intermediate Tier in the current qualification.
What happens to a Foundation result above grade C?
Raw marks are converted to UMS. Foundation results are capped at 83 UMS in Units 1 and 2 and 111 UMS in Unit 3, one UMS below the minimum unit-grade-B boundary.
Which examinations allow a calculator?
Calculators are allowed in Units 1 and 3 and prohibited in Unit 2. Permitted calculators must comply with current WJEC and JCQ rules and cannot offer prohibited symbolic, communication or stored-text functions.
Are formulae supplied?
Tier-specific formula lists are supplied in Units 1 and 3. Foundation lists include trapezium area and uniform-cross-section volume; Higher lists add specified formulae. Unit 2 has no list, and none of the supplied lists is a complete formula book.
How should the content matrix be read?
The four areas contain 27 headline strands. Read each strand horizontally across its Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3 columns because a strand can span units while its subpoint scope differs. Standard type is Foundation content and bold additions are Higher-only.
How is the Double Award graded?
The three unit UMS results aggregate to double grades A*A*, AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF or GG. U is reported below the minimum award standard.
What are the pre-16 terminal and resit rules?
A pre-16 candidate must complete at least 30% in the cash-in series and may resit an individual unit once before a fresh start, subject to WJEC's terminal-result rule. Post-16 candidates have no terminal or fresh-start rule and the better UMS from the two most recent attempts is used.
Can static practice reproduce a full official route?
No. A valid full route depends on three unit papers, the learner's per-unit tiers, calculator conditions, formula lists and live series instructions. Full-mock mode is therefore disabled.
Are the 601 planned questions included?
No. The 601 figure is only a future-authoring allocation across the 27 official strands. This module contains non-question study and coverage assets only, with no question bank or page registration.
