Reaction Progress and Rate

Measure and interpret reaction progress, calculate average rates with units, and explain the effects of temperature, concentration, particle size and catalysts.

Key rules

Rule 1

Reaction progress can be followed through a measurable change such as mass, gas volume or another relevant quantity.

Exam cue: State exactly which quantity changes and include both quantity and time units in a rate.

Rule 2

A progress graph can show the end-point, quantity of product, quantity of reactant used and effects of changing conditions.

Exam cue: Read a graph interval before calculating rather than using the whole reaction automatically.

Rule 3

Average rate is change in quantity divided by change in time; increasing temperature, concentration or surface area and adding a catalyst can increase rate.

Exam cue: Separate a faster rate from a larger final yield; the graph evidence may show one without the other.

Common National 5 Chemistry questions

Is this an official Qualifications Scotland resource?

No. It is an independent study resource aligned to the current public course specification. Qualifications Scotland documents, notices, specimen materials and your centre’s instructions remain authoritative.

What changed for National 5 Chemistry from session 2026–27?

The question paper was reduced from 100 to 80 marks and from 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours. Section 1 now has 20 marks and Section 2 has 60. The assignment remains 20 marks, and its marks are no longer scaled.

How is the current question paper structured?

The two-hour paper has a 20-mark objective-test section and a 60-mark section of restricted-response and extended-response questions. A data booklet is provided.

What does the question paper brief emphasise?

It places substantial emphasis on applying chemistry in new situations and on scientific-inquiry and analytical skills. It also specifies two open-ended questions worth 3 marks each and approximately 25% grade-A marks.

What does the National 5 Chemistry assignment involve?

Candidates complete a centre-set investigation with research and report stages. It must include measurable experimental work and comparison with internet or literature data, followed by an individually produced report under controlled conditions.

How long is allowed for the assignment?

Qualifications Scotland recommends no more than 8 hours for the whole assignment. The report stage has a maximum of 1 hour 30 minutes under a high degree of supervision and control.

Are the study allocations official course weights?

No. Qualifications Scotland does not publish topic-by-topic mark weights. The 601-item allocation in the blueprint is only a balanced future practice-bank plan and does not predict a live paper.

Why is there no full-paper mock mode in this guide?

The authentic assessment includes objective, restricted-response, extended-response and assignment work. Use current official specimen and past papers for exact response formats, timing and marking practice.
