Common Higher Biology questions
Is this an official Qualifications Scotland resource?
No. It is an independent study resource aligned to public Qualifications Scotland documents. The current course page, specification, assessment materials and your centre’s instructions remain authoritative.
What changed for Higher Biology from session 2026–27?
The former two question papers were replaced by one 100-mark paper lasting 2 hours 30 minutes. It has a 20-mark multiple-choice section and an 80-mark written section. The assignment remains 20 raw marks but is scaled to 25 rather than 30.
What does the current question paper brief emphasise?
It gives approximately 70 ± 5 marks to knowledge and understanding and 30 ± 5 to skills. At least 25 marks demonstrate knowledge, at least 25 apply it to new situations, and 25–35 assess inquiry, data, prediction, conclusion and evaluation skills.
Are there extended-response, data and experimental-design questions?
Yes. The brief specifies two extended-response questions worth 10–15 marks in total, one 5–9 mark data-handling question and one 5–9 mark experimental-design question. Both extended-response questions include a choice of topic.
How much of the paper is aimed at grade A?
The June 2026 question paper brief says approximately 25% of marks are grade-A marks. These may appear across course content and skills rather than in a separate section.
What does the Higher Biology assignment involve?
Learners research and report on a Higher-level biology topic involving experimental work that produces measurements. They also gather information or data from internet, book or journal sources and produce an individual report under controlled conditions.
How long is allowed for the assignment?
Qualifications Scotland recommends no more than 8 hours for the whole assignment. The report stage has a maximum of 2 hours and is conducted under a high degree of supervision and control.
Do these 601 questions reproduce the assignment?
No. They are original multiple-choice practice for knowledge, application, calculations and evaluation. They do not provide a report template, model answer or controlled-assessment content.
Are the practice counts official topic weights?
No. Qualifications Scotland states that marks are distributed proportionally across course content but does not publish fixed marks for the three areas or 23 key areas. The counts organise balanced revision only.
Why is there no full-paper mock mode?
The authentic assessment includes written, extended-response, data-handling and experimental-design work that a multiple-choice-only mock would misrepresent. Use current official specimen and past materials for exact paper practice.
