Common NEBOSH National General Certificate questions
What is the current qualification structure?
The current NEBOSH National General Certificate has two 2025-specification units: GNC1 Management of health and safety and GNC2 Risk assessment. Both must be passed.
What happened to NG1 and NG2?
NG1 and NG2 belong to the outgoing 2018 specification. Their final assessment dates are 5 and 6 August 2026 respectively. This guide maps the current GNC1 and GNC2 syllabus and does not mix the two specifications.
What is the GNC1 assessment?
GNC1 is a digital, scenario-based open-book examination. Learners have 24 hours from 11:00 UK time to access, complete and submit the paper, with five notional assessment hours. A closing interview checks identity and familiarity with the submitted work.
What is the GNC2 assessment?
GNC2 is a practical workplace risk assessment and action plan. It has four sections: background; risk assessment; prioritisation of one hazard; and communication, checking and review.
Why does this guide use four hours for GNC2?
The current v2.1 Learning Partner guide and GNC2 v1 guidance both specify four assessment hours and explain that there is no fixed completion limit. The live qualification-page summary still says three hours, so the discrepancy is recorded rather than silently resolved.
What scope does GNC2 require?
The current guidance expects ten accurate hazard descriptions drawn from at least five of 21 published hazard categories. The learner records who may be harmed and how, existing and additional measures, action owners and timescales.
How are the GNC2 marks distributed?
GNC2 is marked out of 100: Background 10, Risk assessment 65, Prioritise one hazard 17, and Communicate, check, review 8. A Pass is 60 or more.
How is the qualification graded?
Both units must be passed, but the qualification grade is based only on GNC1. The published provisional GNC1 pass mark is 45: Pass 45-64, Credit 65-74 and Distinction 75 or higher. GNC2 is Pass or Refer.
How many syllabus elements are there?
There are 11 elements: why manage; management systems; managing risk; monitoring; physical and psychological health; musculoskeletal health; chemical and biological agents; general workplace issues; work equipment; fire; and electricity.
Which elements are assessed in each unit?
GNC1 assesses elements 1-4. GNC2 assesses the practical hazard content in elements 5-11 and also applies 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, element 2 and element 3 as specified in the syllabus.
Does NEBOSH publish element item counts or GNC1 mark weights?
No fixed element question totals or GNC1 mark weights are published. The syllabus provides recommended teaching hours. This guide labels its 601-item plan as a non-official editorial coverage allocation.
Can a learner self-study and register directly?
No. NEBOSH requires learners to register with an accredited Learning Partner and complete the relevant learning before assessment.
Does the syllabus use the same law everywhere in the UK?
The National syllabus teaches the UK's key legal requirements but references different institutions and terminology where relevant. Learners should keep Great Britain, Scotland and Northern Ireland legal and enforcement arrangements distinct.
Why is full mock mode disabled?
A fixed single-choice mock would misrepresent a written scenario-based assessment with a closing interview and a marked workplace practical. Topic and case-study practice are not GNC1 or GNC2 simulations.
