Airborne lidar sends laser pulses towards the ground and records their return. In forested regions, some pulses pass between leaves, allowing researchers to model subtle changes in ground height. Archaeologists have used these models to identify possible terraces and roads hidden by vegetation. A lidar image, however, is not an excavation. A straight bank may be ancient, modern drainage or a processing artefact. Teams therefore compare old maps, walk the site and sample selected features before assigning a date or function.
