Exam cue: Name the IELTS task: listening for detail, reading for information, describing data, writing an argument, answering interview questions, giving a long turn, or discussing abstract ideas.
Rule 2
The strongest answer identifies what the section is assessing: understanding, locating information, organizing a written response, or communicating fluently.
Exam cue: Check wording, paraphrase, distractors, passage location, chart units, essay position, coherence, pronunciation, and response development.
Rule 3
Eliminate choices that over-focus on one keyword, ignore task instructions, use memorized language unnaturally, or miss the purpose of the response.

FAQ
Common IELTS for UKVI General Training questions
Does IELTS for UKVI General Training have different content or scoring?
No. Official IELTS partner guidance says its content, format, scoring and difficulty are the same as ordinary IELTS General Training. The UKVI differences are secure administration and result evidence.
What are the four General Training skills?
Listening has four parts and 40 questions; General Training Reading has three sections and 40 questions; Writing has a Task 1 letter and Task 2 essay; Speaking is a three-part examiner interview lasting 11-14 minutes.
How does General Training differ from Academic?
Listening and Speaking are the same. General Training Reading uses everyday, workplace and general-interest texts, while Writing Task 1 is a letter. Academic uses academic reading texts and a visual-information Task 1.
How are IELTS General Training scores calculated?
Each skill receives a 0-9 band and the overall band is the average rounded under the published IELTS half-band rules. Listening and Reading convert 40 raw marks; General Training Reading usually needs more correct answers than Academic for a given band. Writing Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.
When do I need IELTS for UKVI rather than ordinary General Training?
Use IELTS for UKVI when the current visa route, sponsor or receiving organisation requires a Home Office-approved SELT. General Training often fits migration, work, training or below-degree study, but the exact route and organisation control.
Is General Training suitable for every UK course?
No. It is designed for practical English and below-degree study. Degree courses and professional registration commonly require Academic, and institutions can set their own variant and component-band requirements.
Can I use the new Writing on Paper option?
Not for IELTS for UKVI. The mid-2026 delivery notice makes UKVI SELT fully digital, and the Writing on Paper option excludes UKVI tests.
How does the UKVI Test Report Form differ?
The UKVI form identifies the secure test and carries the UKVI unique reference. Since 29 August 2024 it also displays the CEFR equivalent for each skill and includes a performance summary. These changes do not alter score calculation.
What IELTS band do I need for UKVI?
There is no universal pass band. For four-skill SELT use, IELTS currently maps B1 to at least 4.0 in every required skill, B2 to at least 5.5 and C1 to at least 7.0. The visa route and receiving organisation determine the actual requirement.
Is the overall IELTS band enough?
Not when the route sets component requirements. GOV.UK requires the necessary score in every relevant skill as part of the combined assessment from the same provider, subject to an authorised single-component retake.
How long is an IELTS for UKVI SELT result valid?
For immigration use, GOV.UK requires the approved result to have been awarded within the two years before the application date.
Can IELTS One Skill Retake be used for UKVI?
UKVI accepts One Skill Retake for IELTS Academic and General Training tests on computer in selected locations. The full test must meet provider conditions, and candidates should confirm that the receiving organisation accepts the retake.
Is IELTS for UKVI General Training the same as IELTS for UKVI Life Skills?
No. General Training assesses Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Life Skills assesses Speaking and Listening for specified two-skill routes. Book the test named by the current route guidance.
What identity rules matter?
Booking details must match the permitted identity evidence. GOV.UK normally requires a current, valid, original photo document at the test location; its current guidance also allows an in-UK eVisa verification route without showing a physical document. A mismatch or failure to prove identity prevents testing.
How should I use writing and speaking drills?
Use them to practice task response, organization, vocabulary, grammar range, pronunciation, fluency, and examiner-style interaction.
