Common IELTS for UKVI Academic questions
Does IELTS for UKVI Academic have different questions or scoring?
No. Official IELTS partner guidance states that its content, format, scoring and difficulty are the same as IELTS Academic. This guide therefore inherits the ordinary Academic skills rather than copying them.
When do I need IELTS for UKVI rather than ordinary IELTS Academic?
Use IELTS for UKVI when your current visa route, sponsor or receiving organisation requires a Home Office-approved SELT. Some degree-level Student applicants can have English assessed by a compliant higher education provider, so the exact CAS and course instructions control.
Can I use IELTS Online for a UK visa application?
No. IELTS says tests used for UKVI must be taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. Remote IELTS Online is not accepted for immigration purposes.
Can I use the new Writing on Paper option?
Not for IELTS for UKVI. The current mid-2026 delivery notice makes UKVI SELT fully digital, and the IELTS Writing on Paper page explicitly excludes UKVI tests.
How does the UKVI Test Report Form differ?
The UKVI form identifies the secure test and carries the UKVI unique reference. Since 29 August 2024 it also displays the CEFR equivalent for each skill, includes a performance summary and places the UKVI reference at the bottom. These changes do not alter score calculation.
What IELTS band do I need for UKVI?
There is no universal pass band. For four-skill SELT use, IELTS currently maps B1 to at least 4.0 in every required skill, B2 to at least 5.5 and C1 to at least 7.0. The visa route determines the CEFR level, and universities or professional bodies may require more.
Is the overall IELTS band enough?
Not when the route sets component requirements. GOV.UK requires the necessary score in every relevant skill, with the components awarded together by the same provider, subject to an authorised single-component retake.
How long is an IELTS for UKVI SELT result valid?
For immigration use, GOV.UK requires the approved result to have been awarded within the two years before the application date. Check the current route at the time of applying.
Can IELTS One Skill Retake be used for UKVI?
UKVI accepts One Skill Retake for IELTS Academic and General Training tests on computer in selected locations. The original test centre must offer it, the retake must meet provider conditions and the exact receiving organisation should still be checked.
Is IELTS for UKVI Academic the same as IELTS for UKVI Life Skills?
No. Academic assesses Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Life Skills assesses Speaking and Listening and is used for specified two-skill routes. Book the test named by the current visa guidance.
What identity rules matter?
The original valid photo identity document presented at the approved location must match the details used to book. A mismatch can prevent the candidate from testing.
Is IELTS for UKVI still approved in 2026?
Yes. IELTS announced in March 2026 that UKVI extended the agreement under which IELTS for UKVI Academic and General Training continue as approved SELT evidence.
What sections are on IELTS Academic?
IELTS lists four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Listening and Speaking are the same for Academic and General Training.
How is the weighted mock built?
The mock preserves the official task structure: 40 Listening, 40 Academic Reading, 2 Writing, and 3 Speaking review items.
