Match the booked exam, syllabus and resources
Confirm that the booking uses the current Next Generation exam name, then check its sitting date, syllabus, errata, advance information, permitted texts, tax tables, dataset and practice software. Established students following a transition route should use ICAEW's personal route guidance rather than treating former exams as current syllabus sections.

How to use this guide
How to study the ACA Professional Level
Use the current syllabus and exam resources, build technical depth by exam, then practise the written application, professional scepticism, ethics, sustainability, data and communication skills that ICAEW assesses.
1. Decode the requirement
Identify the role, recipient, verb, deliverable, time horizon and professional skill being assessed.
2. Prioritise evidence and issues
Filter the scenario, data and advance information for material facts, contradictions, risks and missing evidence.
3. Apply and challenge
Use the current technical rule, calculation or framework, then test assumptions with professional scepticism.
4. Conclude for the recipient
Give a supported conclusion or recommendation with ethics, sustainability, implementation and residual risk addressed.
Accounting Including Accounting for Tax
The 25–30% Fundamental Case Study area integrating accounting records, adjustments, non-complex statements and accounting for tax.

FAQ
Common ICAEW ACA Professional questions
Is this an official ICAEW study guide?
No. It is an independent resource mapped to ICAEW's current public Next Generation ACA syllabus, Professional exam pages, permitted-text guidance and transitional arrangements.
Which Professional Level exams are represented?
Fundamental Case Study, Assurance, Risk and Reporting, Corporate Reporting, Data and Assurance, Business and Digital Strategy, Corporate Financial Strategy, and Tax Compliance and Planning. They remain six sections under this one qualification-level slug.
Why are former Professional exam names absent?
The directory follows the current Next Generation ACA structure. ICAEW permits eligible established students to complete or transition from the former suite under route-specific rules, with final former-suite sittings in September 2026, but that does not make those labels part of the current syllabus directory.
How does Fundamental Case Study relate to Certificate Level?
It adds no separate technical syllabus above the current Certificate Level knowledge. Instead, four tasks require that knowledge to be integrated in a workplace scenario using analysis, judgement, scepticism, communication, planning and prioritisation.
Is Fundamental Case Study open book?
Yes. ICAEW states that candidates can access their personal ICAEW Bookshelf and digital learning materials held there and may take written or printed material subject to practical space restrictions. Always follow the instructions for the booked sitting.
How is Assurance, Risk and Reporting divided?
The three-hour exam has five written questions. Assurance and Risk contributes 40–50%, while Financial Reporting contributes 50–60%. The current syllabus then weights the areas within each part separately.
What is distinctive about Corporate Reporting, Data and Assurance?
It combines single-entity and consolidated IFRS reporting with assurance planning, performance, conclusions and reporting. ICAEW also supplies a large dataset and expects candidates to use data analytics and spreadsheet functionality to identify matters requiring investigation.
Are ethics and sustainability separate from technical study?
No. Both recur across the current exams. Ethics and professional scepticism can affect acceptance, evidence, reporting, strategy, financial decisions and tax advice, while sustainability is integrated where it changes reporting, assurance, strategy, finance or tax consequences.
Does Tax Compliance and Planning have six weighted rows?
The specification grid gives percentage ranges for five tax areas. It then states that approximately 20% of the exam covers planning and/or interaction of taxes and provides a sixth learning-outcome area for that cross-cutting work. This guide preserves both facts without double-counting them as official item totals.
Can all six exams use the same permitted material?
No. Fundamental Case Study is open book; reporting and assurance exams use the texts ICAEW lists for the relevant sitting; Tax Compliance and Planning uses the specified tax tables. Business and Digital Strategy and Corporate Financial Strategy rely on their current exam resources. Check the live permitted-text page before every sitting.
Why is a full qualification mock disabled?
The level consists of six independently sat written exams with different durations, numbers of tasks, advance-information rules, datasets and permitted resources. A single generic static mock would misrepresent those formats; use section practice and ICAEW's official practice software.
Are the 601 allocations official ICAEW question weights?
No. ICAEW publishes exam-level methods and percentage specification grids, not a 601-item Professional Level bank. The 601 values are transparent internal coverage allocations for this independent practice bank.
Do these multiple-choice questions reproduce the real written exams?
No. They are original single-choice knowledge, calculation and scenario-decision exercises. They do not reproduce constructed-response requirements, spreadsheet tasks, the Corporate Reporting dataset, Fundamental Case Study advance information or ICAEW marking plans; use ICAEW's practice software and official resources for format rehearsal.
