How to use this guide
How to study the ACA Advanced Level
Use the 2027 syllabuses and pilot materials to build integrated technical judgement. Static topic reviews do not reproduce the written case format; use advance information, pre-populated spreadsheets and official practice software for authentic rehearsal.
1. Decode role and requirement
Identify the recipient, role, deliverable, professional skill, time horizon and decision that the requirement demands.
2. Prioritise case evidence
Combine advance and exam information, spreadsheets and research; surface risks, contradictions, gaps and material drivers.
3. Analyse and challenge
Apply the current technical rule or decision model, test sensitivity and bias, and integrate ethics, sustainability and technology.
4. Recommend and communicate
Give a reasoned, realistic conclusion with implementation, governance, residual risk and further evidence clearly stated.
Corporate Reporting
The 50-65% Technical Case Study area covering principles, performance and financial position, and financial statement analysis.
Key rules
Rule 1
Evaluate reporting principles, measurement bases, regulations, policy and estimate changes, business combinations and emerging issues.
Exam cue: Identify the role, recipient, requirement and evidence relevant to corporate reporting.
Rule 2
Formulate and appraise reporting policies for complex single-entity and group transactions under interacting IFRS requirements.
Exam cue: Apply the current 2027 syllabus principle, use the supplied data and challenge material assumptions or omissions.
Rule 3
Calculate and explain assets, liabilities, tax, financing, employee remuneration, foreign operations and consolidated statement effects.
Exam cue: Conclude with a realistic recommendation that integrates ethics, sustainability, technology and professional scepticism.
Common traps
Reciting corporate reporting knowledge without integrating the case facts and requested professional skill.
Prevention: Do not use a former exam name, retired format, unsupported assumption or generic framework dump that ignores the evidence and candidate role.
Using a former Advanced Level exam label, retired format or superseded technical rule as if it were current.

Ignoring data provenance, contradictory evidence, stakeholder effects or the practical implementation of the conclusion.

FAQ
Common ICAEW ACA Advanced questions
Is this an official ICAEW study guide?
No. It is an independent resource mapped to ICAEW's public 2027 Advanced Level syllabus handbooks, exam pages, permitted-text guidance, dates and transitional arrangements.
Which Advanced Level exams are current here?
Technical Case Study and Strategic Case Study. Both remain inside this one qualification-level slug and first become available in July 2027.
Why are former Advanced exam names absent?
This directory follows the Next Generation ACA structure. Eligible established students can continue or transition under ICAEW's personal route rules, but former labels and their retired formats are not presented as current syllabus sections.
What is shared between the two exams?
Both are four-hour, fully open-book case studies with advance information. The advance information describes the same organisation, while the candidate role and eventual requirements differ. Ethics, sustainability, technology, scepticism and digital skills are embedded in both.
What does Technical Case Study assess?
Corporate Reporting carries 50-65% and Audit, Assurance and Non-Audit Services carries 35-50%. The case normally places the candidate in an auditor role and integrates IFRS reporting, ISAs (UK), controls, evidence, data and commercial judgement.
What does Strategic Case Study assess?
It focuses on business and digital strategy and business management at 30-40%, financial strategy at 25-35%, corporate reporting at 15-25% and assurance at 10-15%. Recommendations must be realistic, reasoned and supported by quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Are integrated competencies extra mark blocks?
No. ICAEW states that ethics, sustainability, technology, professional scepticism and digital skills are assessed across the weighted syllabus areas, with 10-25% available for those competencies and skills. This guide maps them separately for study without presenting them as additive official weights.
How should advance information be used?
Use it to understand the organisation, industry, risks and potential issues, then perform additional analysis and research where useful. It does not reveal every eventual requirement, so avoid preparing a rigid answer before the exam.
Are the exams fully open book?
Yes. ICAEW states that candidates can access their personal ICAEW Bookshelf and digital learning materials held there and may bring written or printed material subject to practical restrictions. Check the live permitted-text page for the booked sitting.
Should Strategic Case Study be attempted last?
ICAEW describes Strategic Case Study as the final exam and says it should be attempted in the last 18 months of the training agreement. Personal eligibility and transition position should be confirmed before booking.
Why is a full static mock disabled?
Authentic performance depends on a sitting-specific case, advance information, pre-populated spreadsheets, open-ended written requirements and professional-skill marking. Static objective practice cannot reproduce that experience; use ICAEW's pilot and practice software.
Are the 601 allocations official exam weights?
No. ICAEW publishes percentage ranges, not question totals. The 300-plus-301 plan is an internal future coverage allocation; integrated competency topics receive no separate item allocation because their marks are embedded across the main areas.
