Common GCSE Statistics questions
Which current exam boards does this guide cover?
It covers the current England AQA 8382 and Pearson Edexcel 1ST0 routes. Their common content comes from DfE DFE-00041-2016 and their AO and tier rules from Ofqual.
Is GCSE Statistics the same as the statistics part of GCSE Mathematics?
No. Some techniques overlap, but GCSE Statistics is a separate qualification built around a much broader statistical enquiry cycle, data quality, inference, evaluation and additional Higher-tier methods.
How do Foundation and Higher content differ?
Foundation assesses the DfE basic and additional Foundation layers. Higher assesses those shared layers plus explicitly Higher-only material, including techniques such as multivariate data, unequal-width histograms, standard deviation, regression and correlation coefficients, distributions, quality control and capture–recapture.
Can I take one Foundation paper and one Higher paper?
No. Ofqual prohibits mixed-tier entry. Both papers must be entered at the same tier and completed in the same series.
What grades are available at each tier?
Foundation offers grades 1 to 5. Higher offers grades 4 to 9, with a narrow allowed grade 3 for a learner just below the 4/3 boundary; otherwise the result is unclassified below the tier minimum.
Are the AQA and Pearson papers interchangeable?
No. Both use two 80-mark, 50% calculator papers that can assess all content, but AQA papers last 1 hour 45 minutes and explicitly include an SEC question, while Pearson papers last 1 hour 30 minutes and describe short, medium and extended responses.
Is there coursework or a non-exam investigation?
There is no separately weighted NEA component in these current routes. Students should complete practical investigations to develop the statistical enquiry cycle, whose planning, interpretation and evaluation are assessed in written papers.
Why is the statistical enquiry cycle central?
It prevents techniques from becoming isolated calculations. A valid enquiry connects purpose, collection, processing, representation, analysis, conclusion, communication, evaluation and justified refinement using authentic data.
Does correlation prove causation?
No. Correlation describes association. A causal conclusion needs an appropriate design and evidence that addresses confounding, direction, bias and alternative explanations.
How should I use calculator or spreadsheet statistics?
Record the technique and required inputs, check settings and scale, estimate the likely magnitude, preserve precision until the final step and interpret the output in the original context.
Why is universal full-mock mode disabled?
