About the exam
GCSE Psychology Exam structure
An independent England multi-board guide based on DfE Psychology GCSE subject content, Ofqual requirements and the current AQA 8182, Pearson Edexcel 1PS0 and Cambridge OCR J203 specifications.
Issuer and path
GCSE Psychology Study Guide is administered through Multi-board: AQA, Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge OCR. Check official resources before booking, retesting, or relying on a stale requirement.
England GCSE Psychology Multi-board Common Core
601 scored + 0 pretest
Five compulsory topic families, one intact optional-topic route, five core areas, debates, research methods, mathematics and assessment response shared by current AQA, Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge OCR specifications.
Before full-paper practice
Confirm board, code, specification version, assessment year and option pair. Use that board's official current question paper, source material, calculator instructions and mark scheme; do not simulate a hybrid paper.
How to use this guide
How to study for GCSE Psychology
Confirm the exact board route, connect theories to prescribed studies, apply mechanisms to unfamiliar contexts, evaluate evidence and practise the current paper design.
1. Parse the command and route
Identify AO demand, tariff, scenario, topic, study or method and confirm that the required content belongs to the learner's route.
2. State the psychological claim
Use precise terminology to name the theory, process, procedure or finding needed for the question.
3. Explain the mechanism or method
Show how the proposed influence produces the outcome, or how the design generates the evidence.
4. Link exact evidence
Use a stimulus detail, prescribed-study feature, result, calculation or methodological characteristic and explain its relevance.
5. Evaluate and conclude
Judge evidence quality, validity, ethics, diversity, alternatives or usefulness through explicit criteria, then answer the precise question.
Common-core evidence map
Move from explanation to study, application and judgement
Connect the five core areas and debates to topic theories, prescribed evidence, research quality and a coherent current-board route.

Key rules
Rule 1
qualification identity
Exam cue: Record the board, code, qualification number, specification version and assessment series before mapping any topic, study or paper.
Rule 2
specification version
Exam cue: Use the awarding body's current specification and official assessment materials as the authority for named studies, content boundaries and task design.
Rule 3
assessment series
Exam cue: Do not mix AQA, Pearson and OCR topic placement or assume a legacy or overseas qualification is part of this England common core.
Study it this way
Common psychology core

Evidence and application
Connect claims to method, findings and context
Use the awarding body's current specification and official assessment materials as the authority for named studies, content boundaries and task design.
Current-route boundary
Apply only the live specification detail
Do not mix AQA, Pearson and OCR topic placement or assume a legacy or overseas qualification is part of this England common core.
Common traps
Using a familiar board's checklist for a learner entered for another board.
Prevention: Do not mix board routes, treat one study as proof, diagnose a person or append evaluation that does not change the answer to the question.
Describing a theory or study without applying, analysing or evaluating it when the command requires more.
Prevention: Do not mix board routes, treat one study as proof, diagnose a person or append evaluation that does not change the answer to the question.
Importing a named theory, core study, diagnosis rule or paper convention from another specification.
Prevention: Do not mix board routes, treat one study as proof, diagnose a person or append evaluation that does not change the answer to the question.

FAQ
Common GCSE Psychology questions
Is this an official exam-board study guide?
No. It is an independent common-core guide checked against DfE and Ofqual requirements and the three current England awarding-body specifications. The live specification and centre entry remain authoritative.
Which current exam boards are covered?
AQA 8182, Pearson Edexcel 1PS0 and Cambridge OCR J203. The official England accreditation table for subjects taught from 2017 lists those three Psychology awarding bodies and no Eduqas route.
What content is compulsory for every route?
Development, memory, psychological problems, social influence, brain and neuropsychology, five core areas, specified debates and interrelationships, two studies per topic, and research methods. Awarding bodies prescribe the detailed theories and studies.
Do I study all five optional topics?
No. Study exactly the two optional-content topics prescribed or selected within the learner's current awarding-body route. Keep the pair together as one route; do not study all five as universal requirements or import one board's theories and core studies into another.
Why are the optional topics not separate modules?
Because the learner is assessed through one complete two-topic route. All five DfE options remain inside one Selected Optional-topic Route domain. No optional topic is a separate directory domain, topic module or independently selectable product.
Which optional topics does each board use?
AQA fixes perception and language, thought and communication. Pearson Edexcel requires the centre's selected two from all five options. OCR fixes criminal psychology and sleep and dreaming.
Does psychological problems require all four conditions?
No. The compulsory psychological-problems topic also contains a prescribed or selected pair from clinical depression, schizophrenia, addiction and autism spectrum disorder. Keep that pair inside the current specification route rather than treating all four as universal modules. AQA and Pearson Edexcel prescribe clinical depression plus addiction. OCR prescribes schizophrenia plus clinical depression. Autism spectrum disorder remains inside the DfE-permitted set but is not prescribed by these three current specifications.
Do all boards prescribe the same core studies?
No. DfE requires two studies for every topic, but each awarding body specifies them. A study learned for one board is not automatically valid required content for another.
What is the difference between AO1, AO2 and AO3?
AO1 demonstrates knowledge and understanding. AO2 applies it to a context. AO3 analyses and evaluates information, ideas, processes and procedures to make judgements and draw conclusions.
Is research methods one isolated topic?
No. Ofqual requires at least 20% of total marks across AO1, AO2 and AO3. Boards may use a named research-methods section and also embed method, data and evaluation in substantive-topic questions.
What mathematics can be assessed?
Decimals and standard form; ratios, fractions and percentages; estimation and significant figures; means, median, mode and range; frequency tables, bar charts, histograms, scatter diagrams, correlation, normal distributions, graph translation and plotting, sampling principles, and data-type distinctions.
Are classroom practical investigations directly assessed?
DfE expects ethical investigative activities that build research understanding, but states that learners are not directly assessed on those specific activities. The underlying planning, method, data, quality and ethics knowledge is assessed.
Can this guide diagnose a mental-health condition?
No. GCSE content teaches classification, explanations, interventions and evidence for examination purposes. It does not provide medical advice or authorise diagnosis of oneself or another person.
Why is universal full-mock mode disabled?
AQA, Pearson and OCR differ in timing, marks, option implementation, topic placement and section design. Full-paper rehearsal must use current official materials for the learner's exact route.
Are the 601 topic allocations official weights?
No. They are internal coverage allocations for this original practice bank; the official qualification-wide weights are AO1 35%, AO2 35% and AO3 30%.
Does completing this multiple-choice bank complete an investigation or written evaluation?
No. The bank provides original four-option single-answer multiple-choice practice. It does not evidence a completed practical or extended investigation, developed written evaluation, practical competence, diagnosis or an official GCSE award.
