Common GCSE Geography questions
Which current specifications does this guide cover?
It covers AQA 8035; Pearson Edexcel Geography A 1GA0 and B 1GB0; Cambridge OCR Geography A J383 and B J384; and WJEC Eduqas Geography A C111QS and B C112QS in England.
What is shared across all seven specifications?
All implement DfE DFE-00345-2014: locational knowledge; maps, fieldwork and geographical skills; place; physical geography; people–environment interactions; and human geography. All also use the same AO weights, 15% examined fieldwork and minimum 10% geographical mathematics.
Why are optional themes not separate directory units?
Boards and schools select different landscape, hazard, ecosystem, resource and issue combinations. Splitting those choices into universal units could imply that every learner studies them or that pieces from different specifications can be recombined. The exact route must remain whole.
Do I need to study every optional topic shown by my board?
No. Study the complete combination chosen by the centre and follow the live paper rubric. Record the specification, selected themes, required examples and assessment year before using a checklist.
Why are named case studies not prescribed here?
DfE and board specifications define the types and development contexts of examples, while many actual places are school choices. Use the centre's selected cities, countries, ecosystems, landscapes and issues with current evidence rather than replacing them with a generic list.
How many fieldwork visits are required?
At least two occasions outside the classroom and school grounds in contrasting environments. Across the experiences learners should explore physical and human processes and interactions and collect primary data.
Are fieldwork locations nationally prescribed?
No universal national location list exists. Centres choose safe and suitable locations within the current board framework. Some boards publish annual or cycle-specific approaches, tasks or guidance, but a location used by one school is not compulsory for another.
Is fieldwork coursework?
No. Fieldwork is compulsory experience but is assessed only through written examination. Boards require a centre fieldwork statement confirming the required occasions, locations, participation and enquiry links.
Will I be assessed only on my own fieldwork?
No. The common DfE requirement includes assessment of the learner's own experiences and unfamiliar fieldwork contexts using supplied data or scenarios. Prepare to transfer enquiry reasoning rather than memorising only one site's results.
What part of the grade is fieldwork?
Fieldwork comprises 15% of subject marks. Ten percentage points come from AO3 application to fieldwork contexts and five from AO4 response to fieldwork data and contexts.
Is there a Foundation or Higher tier?
No. These GCSE Geography specifications are untiered and report grades 9 to 1. Different options, papers and question tariffs are not tier entries.
Why does OCR B timing differ from older materials?
OCR extended Our Natural World and People and Society by 15 minutes for June 2026 onwards. All three J384 papers now allow 1 hour 30 minutes, while the first two content updates are first assessed in June 2027.
How should I treat current place statistics?
Keep the underlying process and specification requirement stable but verify the date, boundary, unit and source. Development categories, populations, hazards, policies and environmental conditions can change during a course.
Why is universal full-mock mode disabled?
A universal mock would misstate paper weights, timing, option rubrics, pre-release resources, fieldwork frameworks and selected content. Use current official materials from the exact board and year for complete timed rehearsal.
Are the 601 topic allocations official weights?
No. The 601 original questions are balanced across ten transferable domains and 36 topics for practice. The official subject-wide requirements remain the assessment objectives, examined fieldwork and mathematical content, while each learner must retain the paper structure and selected options of the exact board route.
