How to prepare for a Boatmasters' Licence
Use the actual area, vessel and operation to select the route, build Annex 8 or 9 underpinning knowledge, complete the required records and training, and rehearse practical handling on the relevant vessel.

Concept 1
A towing or pushing plan accounts for tug capability, tow condition, route, weather, stream, equipment, communications and abort arrangements.
Exam cue: Inspect both towing vessel and tow, including watertight integrity, steering, securing and emergency gear.
Concept 2
Towlines, bridles, shackles, goblines and securing points must be inspected, correctly rigged and protected against chafe or shock loading.
Exam cue: Keep personnel outside the towline danger zone and monitor chafe and snatching.
Concept 3
Radar is listed as a Tier 1 specialist endorsement and normally depends on an accepted radar course rather than the Annex 10 oral syllabus alone.
Exam cue: Set radar range, gain, clutter and presentation deliberately, then cross-check visually and by other means.
