How to prepare for a CPCS category Theory Test

Learn the operator's safe decision sequence, connect it to the current category learning outcomes and practise explaining why the manufacturer, task and site controls apply.

Core concepts

Concept 1

Standard operator Theory Tests are normally face-to-face, verbal, one-to-one and audio recorded by a registered CPCS Tester.

Exam cue: Distinguish published revision questions from controlled answers and live marking.

Concept 2

The standardised 40-question structure excludes A61 and A62; current guidance gives 30 minutes for standard tests and 60 minutes for A62.

Exam cue: Use the exact category's current test documents.

Concept 3

Responses are marked against controlled model answers, with 80% required plus any applicable mandatory questions currently identified for A17, A17E and A77.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Building one universal 40-question mock across all 62 categories.

Guardrail: Do not reproduce CPCS revision wording or imply that one aggregate practice set is an official category paper.

Assuming memorised words guarantee full proportional marks without understanding.

Guardrail: Do not replace a manufacturer limit, competent plan, physical control or authorised decision with experience or memorised wording.

Memory anchors

Verbal, One-to-One, Recorded

The normal standard delivery pattern.

Eighty Plus Mandatory

Both conditions apply where mandatory questions exist.

Thirty Is Guideline

Most standard category tests use a 30-minute guideline.

A62 Gets Sixty

The supervisor category has a one-hour guideline.

Answers Stay Controlled

CPCS does not publish its model answer papers.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
