1. Identify the machine, role and task
Name the category, endorsement, configuration, attachment, environment and people affected.
2. Select the controlling information
Use the operator manual, correct chart or plate, task plan, risk controls and site instructions.
3. Check condition and set-up
Complete pre-use checks, report defects and confirm ground, route, services, visibility and exclusion.
4. Operate within limits
Control speed, stability, load, working envelope, signals and changing conditions.
5. Stop and escalate changes
Do not bypass a defect or alter a planned lifting, demolition, recovery or specialist operation without authority.
6. Complete safely
Park, lower, isolate or secure as specified, record defects and protect people and the environment.

Common CPCS Theory questions
Is this an official CPCS course or question bank?
No. It is an independent study framework built from current public CPCS and HSE material. It contains no CPCS questions or controlled model answers and does not replace category training, the operator manual or an accredited test centre.
Why is every CPCS category kept in one slug?
The tracker defines one cpcs-theory product. These assets preserve that granularity while explicitly mapping all 62 category codes in the March 2026 catalogue. Category families are study navigation, not new tracker rows or official combined papers.
Which category codes are included?
The current catalogue set is A02, A04, A05, A36, A40, A60, A61, A62, A64, A66, A14, A15, A16, A17, A18, A20, A25, A26, A27, A77, A10, A12, A19, A21, A22, A23, A24, A34, A37, A58, A59, A09, A31, A32, A33, A56, A57, A68, A73, A06, A39, A41, A42, A43, A44, A51, A71, A72, A75, A78, A30, A45, A46, A47, A48, A49, A50, A67, A74, D90, D91, D92. A35 remains visible on a legacy revision-support page but is absent from CPCS/CATINFO/MAR26, so it is not represented as a current category here.
Is the CPCS Theory Test the same as the HS&E test?
No. The appropriate NOCN or CITB HS&E result is a prerequisite awareness test. CPCS category theory then checks underpinning knowledge for the selected plant category or role before practical progression.
Do I take a separate Theory Test for every endorsement?
No. CPCS states that one category Theory Test applies across the category's endorsements. A practical achievement is still needed for each required endorsement, and adding a further endorsement to a category already held does not require another Theory Test.
Are all CPCS Theory Tests 40 questions in 30 minutes?
No. CPCS standardised most operator categories at 40 questions with a 30-minute guideline, but excluded A61 and A62. A62 has a one-hour guideline. A61 is a written route whose specific current appendix gives 75 minutes.
How is a normal category Theory Test delivered?
A registered CPCS Tester normally asks the questions verbally in a one-to-one session that is audio recorded for quality assurance. Questions may be rephrased for comprehension without leading the candidate, and answers are proportionally marked against controlled model answers.
What is different about A61 Appointed Person?
A61 theory requires written answers, is not audio recorded and may be delivered to up to eight suitably separated candidates. The specific delivery appendix gives 75 minutes, permits defined reference resources and allows the written theory and practical parts in either order.
What is the pass standard?
The Standard Theory Test requires 80% plus any applicable mandatory question. The March 2026 delivery code currently identifies mandatory questions for A17, A17E and A77. The exact live paper and marking remain controlled by CPCS.
What common knowledge appears across category learning outcomes?
Recurring CPCS learning-outcome themes include operator responsibilities, the manual and other information, pre-use checks, defect reporting, preparation, travel or manoeuvring where relevant, safe operation, services and people, completion, shutdown and environmental control. Category-specific safety-critical duties are then added.
Does a theory pass prove that I am competent to operate the machine?
No. It is the knowledge component of the CPCS Technical Test route. Practical testing, relevant training and experience, vocational competence for the Blue card route, employer authorisation and site controls remain separate.
How long is a theory result valid for practical progression?
The current operator booklet says the category Theory Test is valid for six months for progression to the Practical Test. The appropriate HS&E result also has its own two-year progression window, so both dates must be checked.
Can I use the public CPCS revision questions?
Yes, CPCS directs candidates to its latest category revision questions and learning-outcome material. Questions can change, and the official answers remain confidential. This guide therefore develops concepts and explanations without copying the public question set.
