How to prepare for a CPCS category Theory Test

Learn the operator's safe decision sequence, connect it to the current category learning outcomes and practise explaining why the manufacturer, task and site controls apply.

Core concepts

Concept 1

Except for A61, the category Theory Test is achieved before the Practical Test and is valid for six months for progression.

Exam cue: Track both the two-year HS&E window and six-month theory-to-practical window.

Concept 2

There is no published limit on Theory Test attempts, but each attempt uses the current controlled delivery process.

Exam cue: Confirm current category and endorsement evidence with the centre.

Concept 3

A new category normally needs HS&E, theory and practical in sequence; a further endorsement to a held category omits theory but still needs the relevant practical.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Letting the theory-to-practical window expire unnoticed.

Guardrail: Do not replace a manufacturer limit, competent plan, physical control or authorised decision with experience or memorised wording.

Repeating theory unnecessarily for an additional endorsement to the same category.

Guardrail: Keep category theory, endorsement practical and card evidence as separate scheme facts.

Memory anchors

Six Months to Practical

Retain the category theory result only within the progression window.

HS&E Has Two Years

The prerequisite also has its own validity window.

No Attempt Cap

CPCS states no limit on standard theory attempts.

New Category: H-T-P

HS&E, theory, then practical.

New Endorsement: H-P

HS&E and the relevant practical, without another category theory test.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
