Concept to Risk to Memory to Check-up

How to prepare for R01

Study to the edition covering your exam date, learn the regulator and rule boundaries, then practise applying them to advice and ethics scenarios.

Core concepts

Concept 1

Effective communication adapts language, pace, format and support to the client's knowledge, capability and communication needs while checking understanding.

Exam cue: Check what the client understood, not merely what the adviser disclosed.

Concept 2

Fact-finding gathers relevant objectives, priorities, assets, liabilities, income, expenditure, tax, protection, dependants, risk and capacity information and records material gaps.

Exam cue: If material information is missing, record the limitation and decide whether responsible advice remains possible.

Concept 3

Analysis turns verified facts into needs and shortfalls, compares suitable solutions and communicates a reasoned recommendation, limitations and next steps.

Exam cue: Trace the recommendation from client objective through evidence, analysis, alternatives and documented conclusion.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Using jargon or information volume as a substitute for clear communication.

Guardrail: Do not mix annual tax bases, regulator roles, redress schemes, legal capacities or minimum compliance with an ethical outcome.

Filling fact-find gaps with assumptions that favour a recommendation.

Guardrail: Do not mix annual tax bases, regulator roles, redress schemes, legal capacities or minimum compliance with an ethical outcome.

Allowing client insistence to erase the adviser's analysis, warning and documentation duties.

Guardrail: Do not mix annual tax bases, regulator roles, redress schemes, legal capacities or minimum compliance with an ethical outcome.

Memory anchors

Listen and Adapt

Analyse the Gap

Convert verified facts into priorities, shortfalls, constraints and feasible solutions.

Recommend with Reasons

Connect the recommendation, alternatives and risks to the client's recorded circumstances.

Preserve suitable advice, risk warnings, client decision and the exact transaction process.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.

Knowledge Check (after reading)

Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
