How to study for CCEA GCSE Biology

Core concepts
Concept 1
A valid plan changes one independent variable, measures a defined dependent variable and controls material factors that could affect the result.
Exam cue: Define exactly what is changed, measured and kept constant, including units and measurement timing.
Concept 2
A justified range, interval, repeat strategy and apparatus resolution should match the expected pattern and size of change.
Exam cue: Choose equipment by range and resolution, then explain how it improves the evidence.
Concept 3
Risk assessment identifies hazards, evaluates the chance and severity of harm, and specifies proportionate controls rather than claiming zero risk.

Memory anchors
Independent variable
The factor deliberately changed by the investigator.
Dependent variable
The measured outcome that may respond to the independent variable.
Controlled variable
A factor kept constant so it does not confound the comparison.
Hypothesis
A testable prediction with a scientific reason.
Resolution
The smallest change an instrument can distinguish.
Risk assessment
Hazard, possible harm, likelihood and severity, followed by suitable control measures.
