Answer the exact command word and make no claim broader than the tested range, sample, tier content or data support.

1.1 Cells

Key rules
Rule 1
Cell structures must be linked to their functions and to how specialised cells are adapted for a particular role.
Exam cue: Identify whether the task asks for a structure, its function, or the adaptation that connects the two.
Rule 2
Magnification, specimen size and image size form one quantitative relationship, with careful conversion between metres, millimetres and micrometres.
Exam cue: Convert both measurements to the same unit before using the magnification relationship.
Rule 3
Diffusion is the net movement of particles down a concentration gradient, so surface area, distance and gradient affect exchange rate.
Exam cue: For an exchange explanation, state the direction of the gradient and the feature that changes the rate.
Common traps
Confusing magnification with resolution or treating a larger image as automatically more detailed.

Common CCEA GCSE Biology questions
Is this an official CCEA resource?
No. This is an independent guide aligned to CCEA's current public specification and support materials. The current specification, notices, timetable and centre instructions remain authoritative.
Is CCEA GCSE Biology an England 9-1 GCSE?
No. This qualification is offered by CCEA for Northern Ireland and uses grades A*, A, B, C*, C, D, E, F and G. Do not substitute an AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas or WJEC paper structure.
Is this the same as CCEA Double Award Science?
No. CCEA GCSE Biology is a distinct single-subject qualification with subject code 1010 and its own three-unit assessment structure. Single Award and Double Award Science have different specifications and unit arrangements.
How are Units 1 and 2 assessed?
Both are tiered external written examinations made up of compulsory structured questions. The specification says these include short responses, extended writing and calculations. Unit 1 lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and is worth 35%; Unit 2 lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and is worth 40%.
How does Unit 3 work?
Unit 3 has two externally assessed parts. Booklet A is a two-hour pre-release practical assessment with two tasks completed in the final year and worth 7.5%. Booklet B is a one-hour timetabled written exam in practical contexts and worth 17.5%.
Do I need to know all nine prescribed practicals?
Yes. CCEA states that all nine should be taught. The Booklet A tasks change and are based on, but not identical to, the prescribed list; Booklet B may ask about any prescribed practical or another practical situation arising from Units 1 and 2.
What changes between Foundation and Higher tier?
Foundation questions use the specification content shown in normal type. Higher questions may use any specification content, including Higher-only content shown in bold in the official document. Use the current tiered papers and specification formatting to confirm scope.
Can a static practice session reproduce the whole qualification?
No. Written practice can support Units 1, 2 and Booklet B knowledge, but it cannot reproduce supervised laboratory performance in Booklet A. Use current CCEA practical instructions and your centre's laboratory teaching for that component.
