How to prepare for the CAA GVC

Start with the current certificate and authorisation boundary, work through the five official subjects, then apply the material to mission planning, abnormal procedures and post-flight records with your approved RAE(PC).

Core concepts

Concept 1

Competence combines knowledge, skills and attitudes, and VLOS performance depends heavily on the limits of the remote pilot's visual and perceptual system.

Exam cue: Use an active scan with deliberate eye movement rather than prolonged fixation.

Concept 2

Monocular and binocular cues support depth perception, while retinal blind spots, poor contrast, fixation and limited night vision can hide the aircraft or other traffic.

Exam cue: Reassess range and orientation when contrast, glare, light or background changes.

Concept 3

Visual illusions, false horizons, autokinesis and reduced focal or ambient cues can create a confident but incorrect picture of motion, distance or attitude.

Exam cue: Cross-check visual impressions with aircraft behaviour and the planned operating volume without substituting telemetry for VLOS.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Staring at one point and assuming peripheral vision will reliably detect all traffic.

Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.

Overestimating depth accuracy from a small, distant aircraft against a uniform background.

Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.

Continuing after visual cues no longer support orientation and collision avoidance.

Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.

Memory anchors

Competence

Remote-pilot competence combines knowledge, practical skill and safe attitude.

Scan

Move the eyes through sectors and avoid prolonged fixation.

Blind Spot

A retinal blind spot can hide a target unless the viewing angle changes.

Depth

Binocular and monocular cues both contribute to perceived distance.

Night Vision

Night vision has reduced detail and needs different scanning technique.

Illusion

An illusion is a misleading perception; cross-check and recover before the margin disappears.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.

Knowledge Check (after reading)

Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
