How to prepare for the CAA GVC

Start with the current certificate and authorisation boundary, work through the five official subjects, then apply the material to mission planning, abnormal procedures and post-flight records with your approved RAE(PC).

Core concepts

Concept 1

Sleep loss degrades attention, judgment and reaction, and a remote pilot must assess actual fitness rather than relying on motivation or task importance.

Exam cue: Use the current legal alcohol limit and the stricter operator procedure where applicable.

Concept 2

Alcohol and prescription or non-prescription drugs can impair reasoning, inhibition, vision, balance and sleep; combinations can intensify or make effects unpredictable.

Exam cue: Check side effects and first-use risk rather than assuming an over-the-counter medicine is harmless.

Concept 3

Incapacitation is especially hazardous when its onset is subtle, so the operation needs a conservative self-declaration and a clear procedure for another competent person to make the flight safe.

Exam cue: Stop and transfer or terminate safely at the earliest sign that fitness is doubtful.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Using a minimum legal alcohol limit as a target for fitness.

Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.

Flying while ill because medication masks the symptom.

Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.

Waiting for complete incapacitation before another crew member acts.

Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.

Memory anchors

Sleep

Lack of sleep degrades vigilance, decisions, reaction and error detection.

Alcohol

Alcohol can impair judgment, inhibition, vision, balance and restorative sleep.

Combination

Alcohol and medication together can create stronger or unpredictable impairment.

First Use

Do not discover a new medicine's effects during a flight duty.

Unwell

If illness requires medication, consider whether the illness itself makes you unfit to fly.

Incapacitation

Recognise subtle onset early and use the planned handover or safe-termination procedure.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.

Knowledge Check (after reading)

Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.

Check-up Questions

1-2 question checkpoint
