How to prepare for the CAA GVC
Start with the current certificate and authorisation boundary, work through the five official subjects, then apply the material to mission planning, abnormal procedures and post-flight records with your approved RAE(PC).
Core concepts
Concept 1
An electrical motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy through its rotor and stator, and its rating must match the aircraft's voltage, current, cooling and load requirements.
Exam cue: Trace the energy path from battery through controller and motor to propeller or rotor thrust.
Concept 2
A fixed-pitch propeller has a blade angle that cannot be changed in flight, so its performance is a design compromise across operating conditions.
Exam cue: Inspect the component, attachment, freedom of movement, orientation and configuration against the checklist.
Concept 3
The practical assessment requires aircraft pre-flight inspection and set-up; damage, insecure parts, unsuitable software or configuration, abnormal motor behaviour and unresolved defects are no-go cues.
Exam cue: Record and rectify defects through the operator's technical process rather than normalising them.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Fitting a motor or propeller solely because it physically attaches to the aircraft.
