GVC Privileges, Validity and Transition
What a GVC evidences, the VLOS and aircraft-category limits, five-year validity, entry conditions and transition to RPC-L1.
How to prepare for the CAA GVC
Start with the current certificate and authorisation boundary, work through the five official subjects, then apply the material to mission planning, abnormal procedures and post-flight records with your approved RAE(PC).
Core concepts
Concept 1
A GVC is evidence of remote-pilot competence for fixed-wing and/or multirotor VLOS work in the Specific category only where the controlling Operational Authorisation expressly accepts it.
Exam cue: Read the aircraft category and the Operational Authorisation competence clause before claiming a privilege.
Concept 2
The current GVC pathway has no minimum age, requires a Flyer ID before further training, includes theory and practical assessment at an approved RAE(PC), and the certificate is valid for five years from issue.
Exam cue: Separate certificate validity from Flyer ID validity, operator registration and Operational Authorisation validity.
Concept 3
The CAA states that GVC issue will stop on 31 December 2027; an existing GVC remains acceptable only until its own expiry and only where the Operational Authorisation expressly lists it as acceptable evidence.
Exam cue: For planning beyond 2027, check the current RPC-L1 transition and any RAE bridging route.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Calling a GVC a general permission to conduct any commercial drone flight.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Using a multirotor assessment as evidence for an unlisted fixed-wing privilege.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Assuming a five-year GVC keeps an expired or incompatible Operational Authorisation valid.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Memory anchors
Evidence, Not Permission
A GVC evidences competence; the Operational Authorisation grants the operation.
VLOS Only
GVC privileges do not extend to BVLOS flight.
OA Wording
The controlling Operational Authorisation must expressly accept the GVC.
Entry
Complete the Open-category training and test and hold a Flyer ID before GVC training.
Five Years
A GVC is valid for five years from the date notified on the certificate.
2027 Transition
The CAA says GVC issue stops on 31 December 2027; existing certificates run only to their own expiry.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
