Restrictions, Hazards and Authorisation Boundaries

Drone Code points 8-9. Restricted or temporary airspace, emergency incidents, byelaws, wildlife, NOTAMs and permission for flying outside the Code.

How to prepare for the Flyer ID test

Start with aircraft weight, class and IDs, then apply the people, place, airspace and pre-flight rules to practical scenarios before rehearsing the 40-question format.

Core concepts

Concept 1

Restrictions may arise from controlled or restricted airspace, temporary events, emergency incidents, local byelaws or protected sites.

Exam cue: Check national airspace information and local site restrictions separately.

Concept 2

NOTAMs, signs, official maps, the AIP and current apps provide different information; no one source guarantees that every restriction is shown.

Exam cue: At an emergency incident, stop safely unless emergency services give permission to continue.

Concept 3

Flying outside the basic A1/A3 limits requires the correct CAA authorisation or other applicable permission before flight.

Exam cue: Identify whether permission must come from the CAA, an airport, an airspace authority, a landowner or a club authorisation.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Assuming landowner permission overrides an airspace restriction.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Flying near an emergency to record it because no temporary restriction appears yet.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Treating club membership as unrestricted authority outside its conditions.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Memory anchors

Restriction Sources

Check current official airspace data, NOTAMs, signs, apps and local rules.

Emergency Incident

Do not hinder emergency services; stop safely unless given permission to continue.

Byelaws

Local rules may restrict where you take off, land or fly and may not appear in apps.

Wildlife

Do not disturb or endanger animals and check protected-site restrictions.

Permission Layers

Land access, airspace permission and CAA authorisation answer different questions.

Outside the Code

Obtain the correct authorisation before exceeding the basic A1/A3 limits.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.

Knowledge Check (after reading)

Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.

Check-up Questions

1-2 question checkpoint

Which site may have restricted airspace even when it is not an airport?

An airshow starts near a previously legal flying field. What should the pilot expect?

Answer all questions to submit.
