How to prepare for the Flyer ID test

Start with aircraft weight, class and IDs, then apply the people, place, airspace and pre-flight rules to practical scenarios before rehearsing the 40-question format.

Core concepts

Concept 1

A3 flying normally requires at least 50m from uninvolved people and 150m from residential, recreational, commercial or industrial areas.

Exam cue: Choose the sub-category from class, weight and date before applying distances.

Concept 2

An isolated building at least 50m from other buildings is not treated as one of those areas, but the aircraft must still remain at least 50m from it.

Exam cue: Measure the relationship between buildings before using the isolated-building rule.

Concept 3

Eligible sub-250g and UK0/UK1/C0 aircraft, plus C1 during the current recognition period, may operate in those areas subject to the continuing duty to fly safely.

Exam cue: Increase a minimum distance when height, speed, weather or site risk requires more margin.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Applying the A1 small-aircraft exception to an A3-only aircraft.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Treating one building inside a cluster as an isolated building.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Reading a legal minimum as the correct distance in every condition.

Guardrail: Do not confuse Flyer ID with Operator ID, treat a legal minimum as universally safe, or extend points 37-39 into the official test scope.

Memory anchors

A3 People

Far from People normally means at least 50m from uninvolved people and no overflight.

A3 Areas

Keep at least 150m from residential, recreational, commercial and industrial areas.

Isolated Building

If it is at least 50m from other buildings, stay at least 50m from the individual building.

A1 Area Access

Eligible sub-250g or recognised UK0/UK1/C0/C1 aircraft may fly in built-up areas.

One-to-one Margin

When flying above 50m, the Code advises a similar horizontal distance from people.

Increase Distance

Wind, speed and other risks may require more than the minimum.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.

Knowledge Check (after reading)

Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.

Check-up Questions

1-2 question checkpoint

How far must an ordinary A3 operation stay from residential, recreational, commercial and industrial areas?
