Schedule Management
PMQ objective 20: build schedules from outputs and breakdown structures, manage dependencies and re-estimate or optimise as evidence changes.
How to study for APM PMQ
Build precise APM terminology, compare approaches in context and practise short, structured scenario explanations using the command verb and mark value as a guide.
Core concepts
Concept 1
Outputs are delivered products, outcomes are the changes created by using them and benefits are measurable improvements in value.
Exam cue: Identify whether the structure describes products, work or costs.
Concept 2
A product breakdown structure decomposes deliverables, a work breakdown structure decomposes the work needed to create them and a cost breakdown structure organises cost for estimating and control.
Exam cue: When changing time, state the consequence for resources, cost, quality, risk or scope.
Concept 3
Dependencies link activities, products, projects and business-as-usual work; schedule decisions can affect cost, quality, risk and scope.
Concept 4
Schedules should be re-estimated when actual performance, scope, assumptions, dependencies, resources or uncertainty change.
Concept 5
Optimisation may resequence work, adjust resources, overlap appropriate activities, change scope or use iterative reprioritisation while protecting governance and quality.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Treating a schedule as fixed even when the evidence and assumptions have changed.
Guardrail: Do not offer a generic project-management statement; connect the concept to the evidence, authority and consequence in the scenario.
Compressing activities without checking dependencies, risk and quality consequences.
Guardrail: Do not offer a generic project-management statement; connect the concept to the evidence, authority and consequence in the scenario.
Memory anchors
Output, outcome, benefit
Product delivered, change enabled, measurable value realised.
PBS, WBS, CBS
Products, work and costs decomposed for planning and control.
Dependencies
Relationships across activities, products, projects and business-as-usual work.
Re-estimate and optimise
Use current evidence, then balance time with cost, quality, risk and scope.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
Check-up Questions
Which statement correctly distinguishes an output from an outcome?
How does a benefit differ from an outcome?
