How to study for APM PMQ

Build precise APM terminology, compare approaches in context and practise short, structured scenario explanations using the command verb and mark value as a guide.

Core concepts

Concept 1

Resource planning compares the type, quantity, capability, timing and location of required people, equipment, materials, facilities and information with availability.

Exam cue: Check resource capability and timing as well as total quantity.

Concept 2

An organisational breakdown structure shows the organisational units or roles involved; a RACI matrix clarifies who is responsible, accountable, consulted and informed for work or decisions.

Exam cue: Ask whether optimisation must preserve the completion date or may extend it.

Concept 3

Resource categorisation and allocation differ by life cycle: linear plans may allocate against defined activities, while iterative delivery balances stable team capacity with prioritised work.

Concept 4

Resource smoothing adjusts non-critical work within available float without changing the completion date.

Concept 5

Resource levelling resolves over-allocation to fit resource limits and may change the critical path or completion date.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Using RACI as a substitute for discussion of authority, capacity and interfaces.

Guardrail: Do not offer a generic project-management statement; connect the concept to the evidence, authority and consequence in the scenario.

Confusing smoothing within float with levelling that may move the finish date.

Guardrail: Do not offer a generic project-management statement; connect the concept to the evidence, authority and consequence in the scenario.

Memory anchors

Resource requirement

Type, quantity, capability, timing, location and availability.

OBS to RACI

Map organisational roles, then clarify responsibility and accountability.

Resource smoothing

Use available float to resolve demand without moving completion.

Resource levelling

Fit work to resource limits even if the schedule must change.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.

Knowledge Check (after reading)

Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.

Check-up Questions

1-2 question checkpoint

What should a resource requirement specify beyond the number of people?

Which item can be a project resource?

Answer all questions to submit.
