Proceed only where the task, equipment and conditions are within demonstrated competence and authority; otherwise protect the situation and refer it.
6. Inspect, test, record and restore
Require the competent post-work inspection and testing, resolve faults, communicate status and energise only through controlled handback.

Common ECS Electrical Safety questions
Is this an official ECS revision product?
No. It is an independent study resource aligned to the public ECS assessment page and June 2023 Delegate Guide. ECS, the JIB, an approved provider or the relevant card scheme remains authoritative for booking, delivery, eligibility and card requirements.
What is the current assessment format?
The official guide specifies 30 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes. Each question has four answer options and 21 correct answers, or 70%, are required to pass.
What are the eight assessment areas?
They are basic theory and dangers; regulations and legislation; safe working practices; cabling and wiring; limits and boundaries; equipment types; risk assessments, method statements, safe systems and permits; and basic testing requirements. Their published question counts are 4, 2, 3, 5, 2, 4, 4 and 6.
Is the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental assessment included?
No. ECS states that a Related Discipline applicant needs both a valid ECS HS&E assessment and this Electrical Safety Unit, but the assessments must be booked and taken separately. This slug does not reproduce the separate 50-question HS&E syllabus.
Does passing this unit make me an electrician?
No. ECS explicitly says the unit is not recognised as an electrical theory qualification and is not suitable on its own for entering the electrotechnical sector or training as an electrician.
What work does the unit support?
It supports specialist occupations allied to an electrical installation and emphasises recognising when electrical installation work must be carried out by a suitably qualified ECS cardholder. The person's card route, competence, employer authority and the actual task still control what work is permitted.
Does knowing the safe-isolation sequence prove practical competence?
No. Selecting and using test equipment, identifying every source, proving dead, inspecting, testing and energising are practical safety-critical activities. Written preparation must be combined with suitable training, site procedures and authorisation.
Which regulations and standard does the assessment name?
The public guide names the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and BS 7671 as amended, including guidance notes. For real work, use the current law and standard that apply to the work location, together with manufacturer and site requirements.
Why does this guide avoid a fixed BS 7671 amendment in the topic titles?
The official assessment criterion is deliberately written as BS 7671 'as amended'. Amendments, corrigenda and errata can change, so learners should verify the current IET update page and use the permitted current source rather than memorising a stale edition label.
Does the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 reference apply unchanged in Northern Ireland?
No. The ECS Delegate Guide names the 1989 Great Britain regulations. Northern Ireland has its own Electricity at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1991. For real work, select the legislation and regulator guidance for the actual jurisdiction while preparing to recognise the source named by the assessment guide.
Can I take the assessment online?
ECS currently describes remote-invigilation delivery through the JIB and availability through some training providers, partner schemes and registered employers. Check the live ECS booking and provider information because operational arrangements can change.
