How to prepare for DVSA LGV Part 1

Keep test stages distinct while building the knowledge and anticipation expected of a safe LGV driver.

1

1. Map the qualification stages

Separate Part 1a knowledge and Part 1b hazards from Part 2 case studies, Parts 3a and 3b driving tests and Part 4 demonstration.

2

2. Learn the vehicle before the road

Master daily checks, plated weights, brakes, tyres, height, coupling and load security before applying road procedure.

3

3. Add LGV road procedure

Apply long stopping distance, blind areas, swept path, tail swing and early lane planning at junctions, motorways and reversing sites.

4

4. Build compliance discipline

Identify the applicable hours regime, keep accurate tachograph records and connect defects, documents and enforcement to safe operation.

5

5. Train hazard timing visually

Use written review for large-vehicle clues, then use current clip-based practice for Part 1b response timing.

About the exam

DVSA LGV Theory Exam structure

An independent Great Britain study guide for DVSA LGV Driver CPC Part 1a multiple choice and Part 1b hazard perception, with the separate Part 2 case-study and professional-CPC boundaries kept explicit.

Issuer and path

DVSA LGV Theory Test Study Guide is administered through Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Check official resources before booking, retesting, or relying on a stale requirement.

Driver CPC Part 1a: Multiple Choice

100 items

100 scored + 0 pretest

One hundred LGV and all-road-user knowledge questions in 1 hour 55 minutes, with at least 85 correct required.

Driver CPC Part 1b: Hazard Perception

20 items

20 scored + 0 pretest

Nineteen video clips containing 20 scoring developing hazards, with at least 67 of 100 points required.

Before booking or selecting a test

Confirm the vehicle category and intended use. Book Part 1a and Part 1b separately through DVSA; use the separate Part 2 route only when initial or return-to-driving professional CPC requires it. Northern Ireland uses different DVA services.

How to use this guide

How to prepare for DVSA LGV Part 1

Apply large-vehicle thinking to every rule: know the vehicle and load, scan farther ahead, protect blind areas and stopping space, and keep legal records and CPC obligations in the correct test stage.

1. Identify the vehicle, load and regime

Confirm category, dimensions, plated weights, trailer, load type, journey and the legal or CPC regime that applies.

2. Verify roadworthiness and security

Check vehicle systems, coupling, load restraint, records and any defect before considering progress.

3. Read beyond the cab

Scan far ahead and through mirrors and cameras for blind-area users, swept path, stopping space and route restrictions.

4. Choose the early safe action

Reduce speed, increase space, stop or report before mass, length, load or legal constraints remove the safe option.

Qualification, Test Format and CPC Boundary
Part 1a

Part 1 Format, Official Sources and Certificates

DVSA Part 1a and 1b booking, pass rules, two-year completion window, theory-certificate validity and the official LGV revision sources.

Key rules

Rule 1

Part 1a and Part 1b are booked separately and may be taken in either order or on the same day.

Exam cue: Keep Part 1a knowledge and Part 1b moving-clip skills as distinct preparations.

Rule 2

Both parts must be passed within two years of each other to receive the theory certificate.

Exam cue: Calculate certificate deadlines from the first Part 1 pass.

Rule 3

DVSA bases Part 1a on The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles.

Exam cue: Use the current DVSA Great Britain route rather than a Northern Ireland DVA page.

Common traps

Treating Part 1a and Part 1b as one booking.

Prevention: Do not apply car-scale assumptions to an LGV; account for mass, dimensions, blind areas, load and the applicable compliance regime.

Assuming one passed component remains valid indefinitely.

Prevention: Do not apply car-scale assumptions to an LGV; account for mass, dimensions, blind areas, load and the applicable compliance regime.

Using Part 2 case-study material as the official Part 1 blueprint.

Prevention: Do not absorb Driver CPC Part 2 case-study format or content; it belongs to the separate driver-cpc-part-2-lgv tracker row.

FAQ

Common DVSA LGV Theory questions

Is this an official DVSA product?

No. It is an independent study resource aligned to current public DVSA, GOV.UK and Department for Transport material. DVSA remains the authority for eligibility, bookings, test delivery and results.

What is included in this slug?

Only LGV Driver CPC Part 1a multiple choice and Part 1b hazard-perception learning. The knowledge scope includes Great Britain road rules, goods-vehicle operation, safety and compliance; written hazard topics teach recognition logic but do not reproduce the official clips.

How are Part 1a and Part 1b structured?

Part 1a has 100 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 55 minutes and requires 85 correct. Part 1b has 19 video clips containing 20 developing hazards and requires 67 out of 100.

Must I take both Part 1 components together?

No. They are booked separately, may be taken on the same day or in either order, and must both be passed within two years of each other.

Are Driver CPC Part 2 case studies included?

No. Part 2 is a separate test of seven work-life case studies with 50 questions in 75 minutes and a 40/50 pass mark. The repository tracks it separately as driver-cpc-part-2-lgv, so this module records only the qualification hand-off.

Do I need Part 2 to obtain any LGV entitlement?

Not in every use case. Full Driver CPC is normally required when driving an HGV as the main part of a job. Non-commercial use and other tightly defined exemptions can mean Parts 2 and 4 are not required, but the appropriate licence-acquisition tests still apply.

Does passing Part 1 qualify me to drive professionally?

No. Part 1 is only the theory stage. Licence acquisition also requires the applicable practical tests, and initial professional qualification normally adds Part 2 case studies and Part 4 practical demonstration unless an exemption or specific concession applies.

What is the periodic-training boundary?

After qualifying, professional drivers normally keep Driver CPC through 35 hours of periodic training every five years. Current National and International training choices affect where the driver can work, but periodic training is not tested by this Part 1 slug.

Does this module include ADR qualification?

No. It includes general awareness of dangerous or specialist loads only. ADR driver training and examinations remain a separate qualification and slug.

Can written practice reproduce Part 1b?

No. Written study can strengthen scanning and developing-hazard recognition, but it cannot reproduce movement or the scoring window. Use suitable current visual practice as well.

Why are the study-domain allocations not official weights?

DVSA publishes the overall format and core source books but no fixed public scored allocation for Part 1a topics. The future 601-question allocation here is an internal coverage plan.
