Jurisdiction

England, Scotland and Wales

DVSA administers the Great Britain route. Northern Ireland uses a separate DVA service and Northern Ireland Highway Code.

Two-part test

Pass both at one sitting

A pass in only one part is not retained; the full test must be booked and taken again.

Multiple choice

50 questions · 57 minutes

At least 43 correct answers are required.

Video questions

3 questions · 1 silent clip

The clip shows a normal driving situation and can be replayed during the multiple-choice part.

Hazard perception

14 clips · 15 hazards

Each clip contains at least one developing hazard and one clip contains two.

Hazard pass mark

44 of 75

Each developing hazard offers up to five points; continuous or patterned clicking scores nothing for the clip.

Certificate validity

2 years

The practical car test must be passed within two years or the theory test must be taken again.

Official study basis

3 core sources

DVSA lists The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving - the essential skills.

Not publicly published

DVSA does not publish a fixed scored allocation across the knowledge domains used in this guide.

How to prepare for the DVSA car theory test

Prepare for both theory components while keeping official rules, safe-driving technique and hazard timing distinct.

1

1. Lock in the live format

Plan for 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes, including three video questions, then 14 hazard clips; both 43/50 and 44/75 are required.

2

2. Use the three official source families

Build rule knowledge from The Highway Code and Know your traffic signs, then connect it to practical technique through Driving - the essential skills.

3

3. Master observation and road procedure

Practise mirrors, blind spots, junctions, crossings, positioning, overtaking and manoeuvring as connected decisions.

4

4. Apply hierarchy and changing conditions

Protect vulnerable road users, recognise large-vehicle risks and adapt early to weather, motorways, incidents and breakdowns.

5

5. Train hazard timing visually

Use written review for recognition logic, then use current clip-based practice for the developing-hazard scoring window.

Issuer and path

DVSA Car Theory Test Study Guide is administered through Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Check official resources before booking, retesting, or relying on a stale requirement.

Car Multiple Choice

50 items

50 scored + 0 pretest

Fifty questions in 57 minutes, including three questions based on one silent video of a normal driving situation.

Hazard Perception

15 items

15 scored + 0 pretest

Fourteen video clips containing 15 scoring developing hazards, with up to five points available for each hazard.

Before booking or relying on a rule

Use the GOV.UK DVSA booking service and the current Great Britain Highway Code for England, Scotland and Wales. If the test or licence route is in Northern Ireland, stop and use DVA and nidirect instead.

How to use this guide

How to prepare for the DVSA car theory test

Connect each Great Britain rule to a driving decision: read the road, identify who is exposed, preserve time and space, and respond safely before a hazard escalates.

1. Confirm the rule and territory

Identify the applicable Highway Code rule, sign, driver duty or DVSA process and confirm that the scenario is in England, Scotland or Wales.

2. Build the road picture

Scan road layout, signs, surface, mirrors, blind spots, other users and the earliest clue that the situation may change.

3. Protect the most exposed user

Apply the hierarchy without treating it as automatic priority, and allow vulnerable users enough time and space.

4. Preserve control and options

Choose a legal speed and position that keep a clear view, safe stopping space and room to respond before conflict develops.

Test Format, Official Sources and the Learner Route

Current DVSA two-part format, official revision sources, provisional entitlement, supervision, residency, booking and the relationship between theory and practical tests.

Key rules

Rule 1

The car theory test has a 50-question multiple-choice part and a separate hazard-perception part that must both be passed.

Exam cue: Identify whether the issue concerns test administration, learner legality or road knowledge before selecting a source.

Rule 2

The multiple-choice questions are based on The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving - the essential skills.

Exam cue: Use the DVSA Great Britain booking service only for England, Scotland and Wales.

Rule 3

A learner needs the correct provisional entitlement, supervision and vehicle arrangements before practising on public roads.

Exam cue: Treat a theory pass as a prerequisite for the practical test, not as permission to drive unsupervised.

Common traps

Using the Northern Ireland DVA service or Northern Ireland learner rules.

Prevention: Do not import Northern Ireland DVA administration or road-law rules into this Great Britain module.

Assuming a theory certificate is a full driving entitlement.

Prevention: Do not choose an answer merely because it is technically permitted; check whether it preserves view, control, legal compliance and the safety of others.

Relying on recalled question wording instead of the current official source material.

Prevention: Do not choose an answer merely because it is technically permitted; check whether it preserves view, control, legal compliance and the safety of others.

Memory anchors

Two Parts One Pass

Pass both multiple choice and hazard perception to pass the car theory test.

Three Core Sources

Revise The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving - the essential skills.

GB Means Three Nations

This DVSA route covers England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland uses DVA.

Provisional First

Hold the correct provisional licence before lessons, practice or theory-test booking.

Theory Before Practical

A valid theory pass is required before booking and taking the car driving test.

Certificate for Two Years

Pass the practical test within the theory certificate's two-year validity.

FAQ

Common DVSA Car Theory questions

Is this an official DVSA product?

No. It is an independent study resource aligned to current GOV.UK, DVSA and Department for Transport material. DVSA remains the authority for bookings, test delivery, reasonable adjustments and results.

What must I pass?

You need at least 43 out of 50 in the multiple-choice part and at least 44 out of 75 in hazard perception. Both parts must be passed at the same sitting.

What happens if I pass only one part?

You fail the overall theory test and must book and take the full test again. GOV.UK currently requires at least three working days before a retest.

What are the video-based multiple-choice questions?

Three of the 50 questions relate to one silent short video showing a normal driving situation. During the multiple-choice part you can replay the video and review or change answers.

Is the multiple-choice video the same as hazard perception?

No. The multiple-choice clip supplies context for three questions and can be replayed. Hazard perception uses 14 separate clips, allows only one attempt per clip and scores how early a developing hazard is recognised.

Which sources does DVSA say the questions are based on?

The current revision page lists The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving - the essential skills. Official practice questions are based on the same topics but are not used in the live test.

Does the Great Britain Highway Code apply in Northern Ireland?

No. The current introduction says it applies to England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has a separate Highway Code and DVA test service, so this module does not teach Northern Ireland learner or restricted-driver rules.

Do speed-limit details differ within Great Britain?

Yes. Current Highway Code tables distinguish, among other things, the usual built-up-road default in Wales from England and Scotland. Always identify the nation, signs, road type and vehicle before choosing a limit.

Can written questions reproduce hazard perception?

No. Written study can teach scanning, clues and the potential-to-developing transition, but it cannot reproduce a moving scoring window. Current clip-based practice is also needed.

Why are there no official counts for the study domains?

DVSA publishes the overall test format and core revision sources but not fixed topic weights. The 601-item future allocation in this module is an internal coverage plan rather than an official test blueprint.
