About the exam
DVA NI Motorcycle Theory Exam structure
An independent study guide for the Driver & Vehicle Agency Northern Ireland motorcycle theory test, covering the 50-question knowledge part and concepts behind the separate 14-clip hazard-perception part without importing Great Britain learner rules.
Issuer and path
Northern Ireland Motorcycle Theory Study Guide is administered through Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA). Check official resources before booking, retesting, or relying on a stale requirement.
Motorcycle Multiple Choice
50 scored + 0 pretest
Fifty category-specific and all-road-user questions, including a written riding case study with five linked questions.
Hazard Perception
15 scored + 0 pretest
Fourteen video clips containing 15 scoring developing hazards, with up to five points available for each hazard.
Before booking or relying on a licence rule
Use current DVA and nidirect Northern Ireland pages for eligibility, residency, documents and bookings. A DVSA-branded revision source may support generic learning, but do not use a GOV.UK Great Britain page to replace Northern Ireland learner, CBT, L/R-plate or restricted-rider rules.
How to use this guide
How to prepare for the DVA motorcycle theory test
Link every rule to the rider's exposed position: identify the Northern Ireland requirement, read the road picture, preserve grip and space, then choose the safest lawful response.
1. Confirm the jurisdiction and status
Identify Northern Ireland, the licence category, and whether the rider is a learner, CBT trainee, restricted rider or full licence holder.
2. Read the developing situation
Scan for road layout, surface, signs, other road users, hidden space and the earliest reliable clue that circumstances are changing.
3. Preserve grip, view and space
Choose position and speed that keep the motorcycle stable, visible and able to stop or change plan without harsh input.
4. Apply the safe legal action
Obey the current Northern Ireland rule, protect the most exposed road user and respond before the conflict becomes an emergency.
Licence Categories, Eligibility and Access Routes
Northern Ireland motorcycle and moped categories, minimum-age routes, direct and progressive access, residency and category-specific theory requirements.
Key rules
Rule 1
AM, A1, A2 and A entitlements differ by machine limits, age and the route used to obtain them.
Exam cue: Identify the category sought, the entitlement already held and whether the route is direct or progressive.
Rule 2
A car entitlement does not normally remove the need for a category-specific motorcycle theory test.
Exam cue: Check current DVA rules rather than inferring a Northern Ireland route from a Great Britain licence page.
Rule 3
Progressive access may remove a further theory or CBT requirement only where the lower-category entitlement and experience conditions are met.
Exam cue: Separate eligibility for theory from the motorcycle and training required for later practical tests.
Common traps
Treating all motorcycles as one licence category.
Prevention: Do not choose an answer merely because it is technically permitted; test whether it preserves visibility, grip, space and the safety of others.
Assuming a full car licence is a motorcycle theory-test exemption.
Prevention: Do not choose an answer merely because it is technically permitted; test whether it preserves visibility, grip, space and the safety of others.
Applying progressive-access exemptions when the lower entitlement or holding period is missing.

Memory anchors
AM to A
Read the exact moped or motorcycle category before applying any age, power or access rule.
Category First
Eligibility follows the category sought, the licence held and the access route used.
New Vehicle Group
Moving from car to motorcycle normally requires the motorcycle-specific theory test.
Direct Access
Direct access uses the current age, CBT, theory and test conditions for the target category.
Progressive Access
Progression depends on a full lower-category entitlement and the applicable experience period.
NI Source
Use DVA and nidirect for Northern Ireland eligibility and licensing decisions.

FAQ
Common DVA NI Motorcycle Theory questions
Is this an official DVA product?
No. It is an independent study resource aligned to current public DVA, nidirect and Northern Ireland Highway Code material. DVA remains the authority for eligibility, bookings, test delivery and results.
What must I pass?
The motorcycle theory test has a 50-question multiple-choice part and a hazard-perception part. You need at least 43 correct multiple-choice answers and at least 44 out of 75 hazard points, with both parts passed at the same sitting.
Does the multiple-choice test include a case study?
Yes. DVA's current AMI guide describes some motorcycle questions as a written riding scenario with five linked questions. DVA says the newer video-scenario change is for car theory tests and does not yet apply to motorcycle tests.
Is this the DVSA Great Britain motorcycle test?
No. DVA administers testing in Northern Ireland, and Northern Ireland licensing, learner and restricted-rider rules control this guide. DVA recommends some DVSA publications for generic riding and hazard learning, but that does not make Great Britain administrative or road-law rules applicable.
What is Northern Ireland-specific about learner and R-rider rules?
Northern Ireland uses L plates for learners and amber R plates for one year after a first motorcycle pass. The 45 mph restricted-rider rule applies to category A1 motorcycles displaying R plates, but nidirect says it does not apply to A2 or A motorcycles; those riders still display R plates for the first year.
Do I need CBT before riding on the road?
A provisional moped or motorcycle rider normally needs a valid Northern Ireland CBT certificate before riding unaccompanied on public roads. Provisional A2 and A riding has additional AMI-accompaniment conditions. Check the current DVA route for your category and any exemption.
Does a full car licence remove the motorcycle theory requirement?
Not normally. DVA says a person moving to a new vehicle category, such as car to motorcycle, needs the category-specific theory test. Upgrades within motorcycle categories can have exemptions under the current progressive-access rules.
Can these written materials reproduce hazard perception?
No. They can teach scanning, clues and the difference between potential and developing hazards, but they cannot reproduce a moving clip or the scoring window. Use suitable current visual practice as well.
Why are there no official question counts for the study domains?
Current public DVA material states that the test mixes motorcycle-specific questions with questions for all road users but does not publish fixed topic weights. The 601-item future allocation in this module is an internal coverage plan, not an official DVA blueprint.
Does passing theory let me ride any motorcycle?
No. Theory is one part of the licensing route. Entitlement, age, CBT, learner conditions, machine category, insurance and both practical motorcycle modules still matter.
