Jurisdiction

Northern Ireland

DVA administers the test. Great Britain uses DVSA and a different Highway Code and learner-rule system.

Two-part test

Pass both at one sitting

Passing only one part does not count; both parts must be taken again.

Multiple choice

50 questions · 57 minutes

At least 43 correct answers are required.

Car video scenario

Up to 30 seconds · 3 questions

Each video question has four options; the clip can be played, paused, scrubbed and viewed full screen.

Hazard perception

14 clips · 15 hazards

Each clip contains at least one developing hazard and one clip contains two.

Hazard pass mark

44 of 75

Each developing hazard offers up to five points; continuous or patterned clicking scores zero for the clip.

Certificate validity

2 years

The practical car test must be passed within two years or the theory test must be taken again.

Learner car

Red L · 45 mph · no motorway

The car needs front and rear L plates and qualified supervision; holders of provisional car licences may not use motorways.

Restricted car driver

Amber R for 1 year · 45 mph

The speed limit applies to a motor car displaying R plates, whether or not it is being driven by the restricted driver.

Topic weighting

How to prepare for the Northern Ireland car theory test

Prepare for both test components while keeping DVA process, territorial law, safe-driving technique and hazard timing distinct.

1

1. Lock in the live format

Plan for 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes including three video-scenario questions, then 14 hazard clips; both 43/50 and 44/75 are required.

2

2. Learn the NI-only driver rules

Connect supervision, red L plates, 45 mph, motorway prohibition, amber R plates and certificate validity without importing Great Britain rules.

3

3. Build observation and control

Practise roadworthiness, mirrors, blind spots, junctions, crossings, positioning, overtaking and manoeuvring as connected decisions.

4

4. Add road type and exposed users

Read Northern Ireland signs and road types while protecting pedestrians, cyclists, riders and people around large vehicles.

5

5. Train hazard timing visually

Use written review for recognition logic, then use current clip-based practice for the developing-hazard scoring window.

How to use this guide

How to prepare for the Northern Ireland car theory test

Connect each Northern Ireland rule to a driving decision: identify the driver and plates, read the road, protect exposed users and preserve enough time and space to respond safely.

1. Confirm jurisdiction and status

Identify Northern Ireland and whether the driver is a learner, supervising driver, restricted driver or full licence holder.

2. Read the complete scene

Scan signs, road layout, people, vehicles, hidden space, conditions and the earliest reliable change before deciding.

3. Apply the NI rule

Use the current Northern Ireland Highway Code or DVA process rather than a familiar Great Britain answer.

4. Preserve control, time and space

Choose the safe legal action that protects the most exposed road user and leaves a workable response if the situation worsens.

5. Keep video formats distinct

Use the replayable car scenario to answer three knowledge questions; use developing-hazard timing only in the separate hazard component.

Multiple choice

Test Format, Video Scenario, Sources and Route

Understand the DVA two-part same-sitting pass rule, the car-only video scenario, official study sources and the route from provisional entitlement to the practical test.

Key rules

Rule 1

Understand the DVA two-part same-sitting pass rule, the car-only video scenario, official study sources and the route from provisional entitlement to the practical test.

Exam cue: Confirm that the rule and source apply in Northern Ireland.

Rule 2

Distinguish the replayable multiple-choice video and its three questions from the later one-attempt hazard-perception clips.

Exam cue: Distinguish the replayable multiple-choice video and its three questions from the later one-attempt hazard-perception clips.

Rule 3

Use DVA and nidirect for Northern Ireland administration; a DVSA publication recommended for study does not transfer Great Britain process rules.

Exam cue: Check how the choice affects the most exposed road user and the driver's available time and space.

Common traps

Treating the three multiple-choice video questions as scored hazard-perception responses.

Prevention: Written study cannot reproduce a moving scoring window; use current visual practice and avoid continuous or patterned clicking.

Importing a Great Britain administration or road-law rule without checking Northern Ireland.

Prevention: Do not import Great Britain administration or learner rules; verify the current DVA and nidirect Northern Ireland requirement.

Treating the internal 601-item allocation as an official DVA topic weighting.

Prevention: Do not choose a technically possible answer until it has been checked against the current Northern Ireland rule and the complete road scene.

Memory anchors

Two Parts, One Sitting

Pass both 43 of 50 multiple choice and 44 of 75 hazard perception at the same sitting.

One Car Scenario, Three Questions

The car multiple-choice part uses a video up to 30 seconds followed by three four-option questions.

Theory Before Practical

A learner normally passes theory before booking the Northern Ireland practical car test.

Test Format, Video Scenario, Sources and Route: NI Source

Use the current DVA or Northern Ireland Highway Code rule before applying generic driving guidance.

Test Format, Video Scenario, Sources and Route: Read the Scene

Identify the people, road, vehicle, signs, view and changing conditions before choosing an action.

Test Format, Video Scenario, Sources and Route: Preserve Margin

Prefer the safe legal action that preserves observation, control, time and space.

FAQ

Common DVA NI Car Theory questions

Is this an official DVA product?

No. It is an independent study resource aligned to current public DVA, nidirect and Northern Ireland Highway Code material. DVA remains the authority for eligibility, bookings, test delivery, adjustments and results.

What must I pass?

The car theory test has a 50-question multiple-choice part and a hazard-perception part. You need at least 43 correct multiple-choice answers and at least 44 out of 75 hazard points, with both parts passed at the same sitting.

What happens if I pass only one part?

You fail the overall theory test and must book and take both parts again. DVA says another test can be booked the next day, but it cannot be taken for three clear working days.

What is the car video scenario?

The multiple-choice part includes a driving-situation video lasting up to 30 seconds followed by three questions. Each has four options. The clip controls allow playback, pausing, moving on the progress bar and full-screen viewing.

Is the multiple-choice video the hazard-perception test?

No. The replayable scenario supplies context for three knowledge questions. Hazard perception is a later component using 14 clips and scoring how early you recognise 15 developing hazards.

Is this the DVSA Great Britain car test?

No. DVA administers the Northern Ireland route, and the Northern Ireland Highway Code and learner or restricted-driver rules control this guide. DVA recommends some DVSA publications for generic learning, but that does not transfer Great Britain administrative or road-law rules.

What are the Northern Ireland learner-car rules?

A learner needs valid provisional entitlement, qualified supervision and clear red L plates at the front and rear. A vehicle displaying L plates is limited to 45 mph. Northern Ireland provisional car licence holders must not use motorways.

Who can supervise a learner car driver?

Current nidirect guidance describes a qualified driver as at least 21, holding a full car licence for at least three years and licensed for the relevant type of car. The supervisor must also avoid prohibited device use and remain able to supervise effectively.

What happens after passing the practical car test?

Northern Ireland requires amber R plates for one year after the first car pass. A motor car displaying R plates is limited to 45 mph, whether or not the restricted driver is at the wheel.

What should I study?

DVA says to study the Highway Code for Northern Ireland and traffic-sign material, and it points learners to DVSA essential-skills publications for generic technique and revision. Northern Ireland sources remain controlling for territorial law.

Can written materials reproduce hazard perception?

No. They can teach scanning, clues and the change from potential to developing hazard, but cannot reproduce a moving scoring window. Use appropriate current clip-based practice as well.

Why are there no official counts for the study topics?

Current public DVA material gives the overall question total, pass marks and formats but no scored topic weights. The 601-item future allocation in this module is an internal coverage plan, not an official DVA blueprint.

Who needs to take the Northern Ireland theory test?

A learner normally needs it before booking the practical test, but existing entitlements, automatic-to-manual routes, exchanged licences and residency can change the requirement. Use the current DVA eligibility page or contact DVA for the individual case.

What support can DVA provide?

Current nidirect guidance includes voiceover, interpreter, British Sign Language and additional-time arrangements in specified circumstances. Tell DVA about the requirement when booking and provide evidence where requested.
