How to prepare for Part 2 case studies

Build the source knowledge first, then practise using every supplied fact in a defensible professional decision.

2

2. Learn the source system

Use the current Highway Code, traffic-sign guidance and Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles.

3

3. Read the whole narrative

Extract the driver, vehicle, load, route, site, time, document and developing-risk facts before answering.

4

4. Apply the professional sequence

Check immediate safety, legal compliance, operational feasibility, communication and the downstream effect.

5

5. Review linked consequences

After each original case, identify which fact changed the answer and whether the decision altered later questions.

50 items

50 scored + 0 pretest

Seven computer-based work-life case studies with 50 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes; at least 40 correct answers are required.

How to use this guide

How to prepare for Part 2 case studies

Combine vehicle, driver, load, route, site, time and document facts before selecting the safest lawful action; always carry each decision forward through the rest of the narrative.

Read the full narrative

Do not decide from the first familiar phrase; capture all people, timing, vehicle, load, route, site and document facts.

Identify the immediate risk

Protect people and control the vehicle or site before dealing with schedule, cost or customer pressure.

Select the legal regime

Determine the applicable hours, vehicle, load, security, operator and road rules from the supplied facts.

Choose a workable action

The answer must be safe, lawful, possible with available resources and consistent with professional instructions.

Carry the consequence forward

A break, defect, delay, redistribution, report or refusal can change what is possible later in the same case.

Check the exact question form

Confirm whether one or more responses are required and use any audio or hotspot information supplied by the live interface.

Torque, Power and Engine-speed Bands

Read torque, power and specific-consumption information as practical clues about the engine's useful operating range.

Key rules

Rule 1

Read torque, power and specific-consumption information as practical clues about the engine's useful operating range.

Exam cue: Read the complete case narrative before choosing the rule or action.

Rule 2

Relate gradient, load and traffic conditions to an engine-speed range that preserves control without unnecessary fuel use.

Exam cue: Relate gradient, load and traffic conditions to an engine-speed range that preserves control without unnecessary fuel use.

Rule 3

Use the vehicle manufacturer's information; a general principle does not replace the operating limits of the vehicle in the case.

Exam cue: Check how the decision affects the remaining journey, people, vehicle, load and records.

Common traps

Choosing the highest engine speed simply because the vehicle is heavily loaded.

Prevention: Do not answer from one familiar phrase while ignoring another fact in the linked narrative.

Answering from a remembered rule before checking all supplied facts.

Prevention: Do not answer from one familiar phrase while ignoring another fact in the linked narrative.

Treating the internal study allocation as an official topic weighting.

Prevention: Do not answer from one familiar phrase while ignoring another fact in the linked narrative.

Memory anchors

Useful Band, Not Red Line

Keep the engine in its useful operating range rather than chasing maximum revolutions.

Torque Moves Load

Torque is the turning force used to get and keep a heavy load moving.

Power Sustains Work

Power describes the rate at which the engine can do work.

Case Facts Set Demand

Load, slope and traffic decide which part of the performance curve matters.

Next best moves

Quick check-up

Use a short quiz to confirm the rule pattern is actually sticking.

Check-up Questions

1-2 question checkpoint

In the Northline case, Sam starts the fully loaded rigid on a steep depot exit. Which approach best uses the engine's torque information?

In the FreshRoute case, Priya sees engine revs rising well above the economical band on level motorway. What should she do if traffic and speed allow?

Answer all questions to submit.

FAQ

Common LGV Driver CPC Part 2 questions

Is this an official DVSA product?

No. It is an independent study guide aligned to current public DVSA and GOV.UK material. DVSA controls eligibility, booking, delivery, scoring and results.

How does the current LGV Part 2 test work?

You work through seven short workplace case studies on a computer. The live test has 50 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes, with between 5 and 10 questions attached to each case. You need 40 correct answers to pass.

Why do some official pages give a different per-case range?

The current GOV.UK qualification page states 5 to 10 questions per case, while the current official DVSA publishing-service overview states 6 to 8. This guide uses the GOV.UK service-page range and the common fixed facts of seven cases and 50 total questions; it does not invent a fixed allocation for any individual case.

Are all questions single-answer text questions?

Do not assume that. GOV.UK describes the assessment as multiple choice, while the current official DVSA publishing service identifies single-response, multiple-response, audio and hotspot interactions. Written practice cannot reproduce every live interface.

Must Part 1 be passed before Part 2?

No. Current GOV.UK guidance says Part 2 can be booked once the relevant provisional licence is held; Part 1 does not have to be passed first.

What happens after passing Part 2?

The result letter contains the reference needed to book Part 4, the practical demonstration. The Part 2 pass letter is valid for two years, and Part 4 must be passed in that window or Part 2 has to be passed again.

What is the official study basis?

DVSA lists The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles. The official LGV Part 2 e-learning is an additional revision option.

Is the public Driver CPC syllabus a scored Part 2 blueprint?

No public fixed Part 2 topic weighting is claimed. The GOV.UK syllabus page explicitly governs periodic-training content. This guide uses its 14 objectives applicable to goods-vehicle licences as a transparent coverage taxonomy alongside the three books that DVSA names for Part 2.

How should a linked case study be answered?

Read the full narrative, identify the vehicle, load, people, route, time, site and documents, then test each option against those facts. Carry earlier facts and consequences into later questions unless the narrative changes them.

Does this slug include Driver CPC Part 1?

No. LGV Part 1a multiple choice and Part 1b hazard perception remain in the separately tracked dvsa-lgv-theory module. Parts 3a, 3b and 4 are practical assessments and are also outside this written asset set.

Does every LGV licence holder need Part 2?

No. Full Driver CPC is normally required when driving an HGV as the main part of a job, but current exemptions and particular return-to-driving or training routes can change what is required. Licence entitlement and Driver CPC are separate questions.

Is this the PCV Part 2 test or conversion test?

No. This slug is for the goods-vehicle case-study route. The PCV case-study route and the conversion test used when moving between LGV and PCV professional qualifications remain separate.

Does passing Part 2 replace periodic training?

No. After qualification, Driver CPC is normally maintained with 35 hours of periodic training every five years. Some eligible returning drivers can choose Parts 2 and 4 once instead of the specified training route, but that does not turn Part 2 into recurring periodic training.

Why is a full mock disabled?

The current framework cannot faithfully assemble exactly seven linked narratives, preserve every dependency across 50 questions, or reproduce audio and hotspot interactions. Case-study practice remains available without claiming a live-test replica.

What happens after a failed attempt?

Current GOV.UK guidance allows another test to be booked immediately, but it cannot be taken for another three clear working days.
