Common City & Guilds 2377-77 questions
Which City & Guilds 2377 qualification is current?
The current qualification card is 2377-77, the Level 3 Award in the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, accreditation number 603/6790/8. City & Guilds says it replaces 2377-22 and 2377-32.
What is the 2377-701 assessment structure?
It is an invigilated, on-demand E-volve multiple-choice test with 50 questions in 1 hour 45 minutes. It is open book and requires 80%, or 40 out of 50, for a Pass.
How are the 50 questions distributed?
The handbook publishes LO1–LO7 counts of 4, 6, 3, 8, 8, 18 and 3 respectively. That equals 8%, 12%, 6%, 16%, 16%, 36% and 6%. The 601 Pass Harbor questions are a separate practice allocation, not the official test length.
What can I take into 2377-701?
The current City & Guilds permitted-materials list allows the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, 5th edition. The handbook also allows a non-programmable calculator. Your centre controls the live assessment conditions.
What does 2377-702 assess?
The public handbook identifies three tasks: inspect and test Class I equipment; inspect and test one specified Class II variant; and complete the required documentation. The public LO8 scope includes conventional Class II variants and Class II FE, plus the equipment register, visual or combined record and label.
Do I have to pass both components?
Yes. 2377-701 and 2377-702 are both mandatory and each is Pass/Fail. Passing the knowledge test or completing written practice alone does not achieve the qualification.
Is the qualification only about portable appliances?
No. “PAT” is common shorthand and the City & Guilds page still uses some portable-appliance wording, but the current qualification and 5th edition IET Code use the broader scope of electrical equipment. Classification, connection and risk matter more than whether an item is easily carried.
Does the law require annual PAT testing?
No. HSE says the law requires electrical equipment to be maintained so far as necessary to prevent danger, but it does not require universal PAT or annual testing. Frequency and activity should be proportionate to equipment, users, environment, use and previous evidence.
Does every item need an electrical test?
No. A maintenance system can combine user checks, formal visual inspection and testing. The correct activity follows risk and evidence; some low-risk equipment may need visual checks without routine instrument testing, while higher-risk or suspect equipment needs more.
Are there formal entry requirements?
City & Guilds sets no formal entry qualification, but the award is for candidates aged 18 and over and centres must judge the learner's potential. The handbook expects familiarity with electrical systems and electrical hazards, so this is not a substitute for basic electrical competence.
Is 2377-77 the same as BS 7671 or inspection of fixed installations?
No. 2377-77 focuses on in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It does not replace a BS 7671 qualification, fixed-installation inspection and testing competence, manufacturer training, employer authorisation or task-specific risk controls.
Can this guide prepare the practical assignment?
It can help you understand class, sequence, test choice, calculations, results and records. It cannot observe safe isolation, instrument handling, physical inspection, live test performance or documentation under the official assignment conditions, so hands-on preparation remains essential.
