FAQ
Common CISI Investment Operations questions
What is the current UK IOC route?
CISI advises candidates in FCA-regulated roles to take Introduction to Securities & Investment, UK Financial Regulation and one technical unit relevant to the role. This guide preserves that route and every current English technical choice in one existing slug.
Which technical options are currently available in English?
Asset Servicing; Client Money and Assets; Collective Investment Schemes Administration; Combating Financial Crime; Derivatives; Global Financial Compliance; Global Securities Operations; Operational Risk; Platforms, Wealth Management and Service Providers; Risk in Financial Services; Technology in Investment Management; and Transfer Agency Administration and Oversight.
Do I take all 14 units shown here?
No. The 14 sections are a content directory: the two units recommended for the UK FCA route plus all 12 possible English technical selections. A normal UK route completes three exams. IOC+ is a separate extended outcome obtained by completing a fourth IOC unit.
Why are international introductions and overseas regulatory papers excluded?
This tracker row is the UK qualification slug. CISI also permits employer-agreed international combinations using International Introduction variants, jurisdiction-specific regulatory papers or an accepted local regulatory paper. Those global route variants are a scope boundary, not additional modules inside this UK asset.
Why is Global Financial Compliance (Arabic) not another option here?
It is a language delivery of the same technical subject, not a thirteenth English technical syllabus. The slug is an English standalone asset, so the current English Global Financial Compliance unit is represented once.
Why does the older factsheet show fewer technical choices?
The linked factsheet is dated November 2022 and does not list Combating Financial Crime. CISI's current dynamic IOC qualification page does list it, so the live page and exam service control the current option set while the factsheet remains useful for route and assessment context.
What examination formats apply?
Introduction and most technical units have 50 scored multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. UK Financial Regulation has 75 in 90 minutes. Derivatives, Global Financial Compliance, Risk in Financial Services and Transfer Agency Administration and Oversight have 100 in 120 minutes.
What is the pass mark?
CISI's current exam details publish 70% for the mapped units. That corresponds to 35 of 50, 52.5 of 75 as a percentage threshold, or 70 of 100; candidates should rely on CISI's result rules rather than infer rounding from this guide.
Are trial questions scored?
No. Current syllabus assessment notes generally allow up to 10% additional CBT trial questions that are unidentified and do not contribute to the result; proportionately more time is provided. The booked exam notice and current CISI policy control the sitting.
Which Risk in Financial Services syllabus applies on 29 July 2026?
Version 11 applies through 10 August 2026 and supplies the weights used here. Version 12 applies from 11 August 2026 and retains the same ten element titles while changing their weights. Always match the booked exam date to the controlling version.
Why does Technology in Investment Management say V13 here when its PDF footer says Version12?
The current CISI exam record and attachment identify the live syllabus as version 13, effective from 11 May 2026, and the cover carries that effective date. The internal Version12 footer is a publication artefact retained in CISI's current attachment.
How are the 601 practice items allocated?
Introduction and UKFR receive 100 original practice items each. The 12 technical options share 401 items in allocations of 33 or 34. Within every unit, the bank follows the relative weights in its current published examination specification. These are study-bank allocations, not one official CISI paper.
Does passing the IOC authorise me to perform an FCA-regulated activity?
No. CISI describes the IOC as appearing in the FCA Appropriate Qualification tables for certain overseeing roles depending on the technical unit. The firm's permissions, the exact activity, employer training and competence assessment, supervision and any other regulatory requirements still apply.
Why is full-mock mode disabled?
There is no official 14-unit paper. Candidate routes contain three separately booked exams and a role-specific technical choice, with three different question-and-time formats. The current practice framework cannot enforce that option choice, so a qualification-wide exact mock would be misleading.
Is this an official CISI question bank?
No. It is an independent syllabus-mapped bank of original multiple-choice practice. It does not contain recalled, past-paper or secure CISI questions, and its single-bank coverage of all technical choices should not be mistaken for one official 14-unit examination.
