How to use this guide
How to study a flexible CII Certificate route
Confirm the units on your Learning Statement first, study the core route before its options, and prepare to the current syllabus and exam guide for each selected unit.
1. Identify the unit and syllabus boundary
Name the selected unit, applicable edition, jurisdiction and learning outcome before applying a rule.
2. Classify the parties, risk and process stage
Identify client or insured, intermediary, insurer or reinsurer, the exposure and whether the issue concerns placement, underwriting, service, claim or complaint.
3. Apply wording, authority and evidence
Use the relevant contract term, legal or regulatory duty, underwriting authority and available facts without importing rules from another unit.
4. Choose the defensible outcome
Prefer the answer that is technically correct, fair to the customer, within authority and supported by a clear record or next step.
IF1 Insurance, Legal and Regulatory
The principal UK core unit: risk, insurance, market structure, contract and agency, insurance principles, regulation, consumer protection, complaints and ethics.
Key rules
Rule 1
Risk identification and management lead into insurance as a transfer mechanism, the main classes of business and the structure of the insurance market.
Exam cue: Identify the risk, parties, contract stage and applicable insurance principle before choosing a legal or operational result.
Rule 2
Contract, agency, insurable interest, good faith, proximate cause, indemnity, contribution and subrogation shape how non-complex insurance situations are analysed.
Exam cue: Separate prudential regulation, conduct regulation, complaint resolution and compensation rather than treating them as one function.
Rule 3
The UK framework combines PRA and FCA roles, conduct requirements, FOS and FSCS protection, complaints handling and application of the CII Code of Ethics.
Exam cue: For ethics scenarios, identify the duty, affected stakeholder, conflict and action that best supports public trust.
Common traps
Treating every loss as covered merely because a policy exists.
Prevention: Do not mix routes, units, jurisdictions, policy sections or current and withdrawn rules merely because the terminology sounds similar.
Confusing the roles of the FCA, PRA, FOS and FSCS.
Prevention: Do not mix routes, units, jurisdictions, policy sections or current and withdrawn rules merely because the terminology sounds similar.
Applying a technical rule without considering disclosure, fair treatment, complaints or ethical conduct.
Prevention: Do not mix routes, units, jurisdictions, policy sections or current and withdrawn rules merely because the terminology sounds similar.

FAQ
Common CII Certificate questions
Is this an official CII study guide?
No. This is an independent guide mapped to CII's current public qualification specification, qualification page and unit pages. CII's current syllabus, exam guide, updates and assessment policies control each live unit.
What does the cii-certificate-in-insurance slug cover?
It covers the complete flexible Level 3 Certificate in Insurance as one qualification. IF1, LM1, LM2 and the UK-applicable Certificate-level options remain unit topics inside this slug rather than becoming separate Pass Harbor products.
What are the current UK core routes?
Use IF1 Insurance, Legal and Regulatory as the 15-credit general-insurance core, or complete both LM1 London Market Insurance Essentials and LM2 London Market Insurance Principles and Practices as the 25-credit London Market core route.
Which current Certificate-level option units are covered?
The UK-applicable options are IF2, IF3, IF4, IF5, IF6, IF7, IF8, IF9, I10, I11, GR1, R05 and LM3. The qualification specification also lists non-UK WCE and WUE; the live qualification page additionally lists W04 and Arabic variants WCA and WUA. This UK track records those units and variants but does not turn them into UK study topics.
Do I always take exactly two option units?
CII's qualification page describes one core route and option units, but the controlling completion rule is a minimum of 40 credits. Two 15-credit options with IF1 produce 45 credits; IF1 plus one 15-credit and one 10-credit option produces 40. Two 10-credit options with IF1 total only 35, so check the complete credit plan rather than relying on the number of units alone.
Can Diploma or Advanced Diploma units count?
The March 2026 specification allows eligible Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Insurance units worth 5–50 credits at levels 2–7. Because eligibility, overlap and prior learning depend on the learner's record, confirm the intended combination with CII before enrolment.
What happens if I take LM1, LM2 and LM3?
CII states that this combination achieves the CII Level 3 Certificate in London Market Insurance instead of the ordinary Certificate in Insurance. Learners seeking this slug's award should not assume LM3 can simply complete the LM core route without changing the qualification title.
Are all unit exams the same length?
No. Current unit pages range from 50 to 100 questions and from 60 to 120 minutes, with some units using case-study clusters. Prepare from the current page, syllabus and exam guide for each unit you actually select.
Can equivalent or withdrawn units provide credit?
Sometimes. CII publishes equivalence rules because overlapping units may generate only one credit award. A withdrawn equivalent may satisfy a requirement, but CII advises learners to seek Customer Service clarification rather than assuming duplicate credits.
Does passing the qualification automatically grant CII member designations?
Qualification completion and permission to use a member designation are related but separate matters. Check CII's current membership, designation and continuing professional development conditions before using post-nominals.
