The four operations apply to positive and negative integers, while brackets, powers, roots and reciprocals control operation order.

Common CCEA GCSE Mathematics questions
Is this an official CCEA resource?
No. This is an independent guide aligned to CCEA's public specification and support materials. The current specification, timetable, entry codes, basedata and centre instructions remain authoritative.
Is this an England 9-1 GCSE or a UK-wide paper?
No. It serves CCEA GCSE Mathematics in Northern Ireland and uses grades A*, A, B, C*, C, D, E, F and G. Do not substitute AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas or WJEC structures.
Which units do I take?
You take two units: one from M1-M4 and one completion unit from M5-M8. CCEA's recommended pathways are M1+M5, M2+M6, M3+M7 and M4+M8. Confirm your actual entries with your centre.
Can I add all eight unit percentages together?
No. They are alternatives for learners at different stages and tiers. Inside a valid recommended pathway, the initial unit contributes 45% and the completion unit contributes 55%, making 100%.
What calculator conditions apply?
A calculator is required for M1-M4 and for Paper 2 of M5-M8. A calculator must not be used for Paper 1 of M5-M8. Use equipment permitted by the current CCEA and JCQ instructions.
How long are the papers?
M1 and M2 are single 1 hour 45 minute calculator papers; M3 and M4 are single 2 hour calculator papers. M5 and M6 have two 1 hour papers, while M7 and M8 have two 1 hour 15 minute papers.
Is content cumulative?
Yes. For example, M5 builds on M1; M6 builds on M1, M2 and M5; M7 builds on M1-M3 and M5-M6; and M8 builds on all preceding units. Revision must include the prerequisites for the completion unit.
Can Foundation candidates gain Functional Mathematics?
Yes. CCEA reports Functional Mathematics within Foundation study: M1 supports Level 1 and M2 can support Level 1 or Level 2, subject to the standard CCEA sets for the series.
Can a static practice session reproduce my exact full examination?
Not safely without route-aware paper assembly. Each learner takes only one of four recommended pathways, and every completion test has separate non-calculator and calculator papers. This module therefore offers unit and mixed practice rather than claiming one universal full mock.
