Common CCEA GCSE English Literature questions
Is this an official CCEA resource?
No. This is an independent study guide aligned to CCEA's public specification and support materials. The current specification, prescribed-text information, annual Unit 3 tasks and centre instructions remain authoritative.
Is this an England 9-1 English Literature GCSE?
No. It serves CCEA GCSE English Literature in Northern Ireland. It is untiered and uses the CCEA A*–G scale including C*. Do not import another board's set texts, paper structure or assessment objectives.
Does this guide choose my novel, drama, anthology or Shakespeare play?
No. Your centre selects from the current CCEA requirements. The guide teaches transferable response skills and never treats an optional title or anthology as a separate product route.
How is Unit 1 assessed?
Unit 1 is a 105-minute external examination worth 30%. Section A lasts about 60 minutes and is a closed-book response to the selected prescribed modern novel. Section B lasts about 45 minutes and sets one question on an unseen nineteenth-century prose extract; CCEA suggests 15 minutes reading and 30 minutes writing.
What can I bring into Unit 2?
For Section A, candidates may use an unannotated copy of the selected prescribed play. For Section B, candidates may use an unannotated copy of the selected official poetry anthology. Follow current CCEA and centre rules on permitted editions and annotation.
How does the Unit 2 poetry question work?
Candidates answer one of two questions for the anthology studied by their centre. Each question requires analysis of two poems from that anthology, including comparison and relevant contextual understanding.
How does Unit 3 controlled assessment work?
Unit 3 is one extended whole-play Shakespeare response worth 20% and completed in a maximum of two hours. CCEA replaces themes and tasks annually. Task setting and the final timed response are high control; preparation is limited control; teachers mark and CCEA moderates.
Can I prepare from an old Unit 3 theme?
Old tasks may support general skills practice, but assessed work must use a CCEA theme and task valid for the intended moderation year. Confirm the current materials with the centre before selecting the play or planning the response.
Can a static practice session reproduce the whole qualification?
No. Practice can model prose, drama and poetry analysis, comparison and timed decisions, but it cannot reproduce an authenticated Unit 3 controlled response or choose the learner's set texts. This module therefore does not claim a full mock mode.
