Pass standard

75% per paper

FCL.025 requires at least 75% in each paper and specifies no penalty marking.

Series limit

18 months

All required papers must be passed within 18 months counted from the end of the calendar month of the first attempt.

Attempt limits

4 attempts · 6 sittings

Failing one paper within four attempts, or failing to complete the set within six sittings or 18 months, triggers a complete-set retake after further training.

One sitting

10 days

CAA defines a sitting as a 10-day period; timetable sessions currently run from 1 hour 5 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes.

Recommendation

12 months

The training-organisation recommendation is valid for 12 months; at least one paper must be attempted before it expires.

Exam language

English

UK CAA theoretical knowledge examinations are available only in English.

ATPL issue validity

7-year rule

For ATPL issue, the completed theory remains valid for seven years from the last validity date of the relevant aeroplane IR or, for helicopters, helicopter type rating entered in the licence.

How to prepare for UK CAA ATPL theory

Anchor the study plan to the licence route and official paper code before choosing resources or setting a mock schedule.

1

1. Fix the route and paper set

Confirm ATPL(A), ATPL(H) or ATPL(H)/IR with your ATO. Record the applicable 032/034, 081/082 and 092 branches before building a timetable.

2

2. Map the official learning objectives

Use ORS9 Schedule 1 by subject code and link each objective to the 29 study topics rather than relying only on textbook chapter names.

3

3. Build calculation fluency

Practise mass and balance, performance, flight planning, meteorology and navigation with units, charts and reasonableness checks.

4

4. Rehearse one paper at a time

Use the CAP 1721 question count and time for the selected paper, then review errors against the official objective and the underlying operational decision.

How to use this guide

How to prepare for UK CAA ATPL theory

Work from your ATO recommendation and selected A/H route, master the official learning objectives by subject code, then rehearse paper-specific timing, calculations and operational decisions.

1. Select A, H or H/IR

Lock the licence route and retain the exact paper list, question total and timing from the current CAA matrix.

2. Select the official paper code

Work within 010–092 and use 032/081 for aeroplanes or 034/082 for helicopters; add 092 only where the route requires it.

3. Trace the learning objective

Study the underlying concept, calculation or procedure and verify it against the current ORS9 objective and operational source.

4. Test and repair by paper

Rehearse to the paper's time and question count, then repair the specific objective rather than memorising an isolated answer.

ATPL Theory

International Law, Licensing and Airworthiness

Chicago Convention foundations, international organisations, aircraft nationality and airworthiness, Part-FCL licensing and medical structures.

Key rules

Rule 1

ICAO standards, conventions and international organisations shape national aviation rules but do not replace the applicable UK regulation.

Exam cue: Identify whether a question asks about an international standard, an organisation or a directly applicable UK requirement.

Rule 2

Registration, nationality, certificates of airworthiness and continuing-airworthiness responsibilities answer different legal questions.

Exam cue: Separate aircraft identity and registration from technical airworthiness approval.

Rule 3

Part-FCL licence, rating, medical and recency requirements must be matched to the privilege being exercised.

Exam cue: Map the licence, rating and medical requirement before deciding whether a flight privilege is available.

Common traps

Treating an ICAO Annex as if every provision applied directly without UK implementation.

Prevention: Do not mix ATPL(A), ATPL(H) and ATPL(H)/IR paper requirements or treat the aggregate 601-item study allocation as an official CAA examination total.

Confusing registration documents with airworthiness evidence.

Prevention: Do not mix ATPL(A), ATPL(H) and ATPL(H)/IR paper requirements or treat the aggregate 601-item study allocation as an official CAA examination total.

Assuming a licence alone supplies every rating, medical or recency privilege.

Prevention: Do not mix ATPL(A), ATPL(H) and ATPL(H)/IR paper requirements or treat the aggregate 601-item study allocation as an official CAA examination total.

Memory anchors

Chicago Convention

The foundational convention created the international civil-aviation framework and ICAO.

ICAO

ICAO develops international standards and recommended practices; states implement them through their own systems.

Registration

Registration establishes nationality and identity; it is not proof of airworthiness.

Airworthiness

Airworthiness approval concerns conformity and condition for safe operation.

Privilege Check

Licence, rating, medical, recency and operating conditions must all support the intended privilege.

Next best moves

Quick check-up

Use a short quiz to confirm the rule pattern is actually sticking.

Check-up Questions

1-2 question checkpoint

A State wants its civil aircraft to overfly another contracting State on a scheduled international service. Which principle applies?

Which ICAO body adopts international Standards and Recommended Practices as Annexes to the Chicago Convention?

FAQ

Common CAA ATPL Theory questions

Is this an official UK CAA course or question bank?

No. This is an independent study guide and contains no examination questions. Your approved training organisation controls the course, progress checks and recommendation, and the UK CAA controls the official e-examinations.

Why does one slug cover aeroplanes and helicopters?

The tracker defines one UK CAA ATPL theory slug. The assets preserve that granularity while keeping three explicit routes: ATPL(A), ATPL(H), and ATPL(H)/IR. Shared subjects stay together, while 032 versus 034, 081 versus 082 and IFR-specific material remain visibly separate.

How many subjects are in the ATPL(A) route?

The current CAA ATPL(A) page lists 14 areas. CAP 1721 maps them to papers 010, 021, 022, 031, 032, 033, 040, 050, 061, 062, 070, 081, 091 and 092, totalling 682 questions and 18 hours 15 minutes.

How is ATPL(H) different from ATPL(H)/IR?

The standalone ATPL(H) matrix has 13 papers and does not include 092 IFR Communications. The CAA also states that ATPL(H) exams do not contain all the relevant IR(H) material, so additional instrument-rating examinations are required. CAP 1721 separately lists an ATPL(H)/IR route with 14 papers.

Are ATPL(A) passes valid for an IR(A)?

Yes. The CAA states that ATPL(A) examinations are valid for IR(A), while ATPL(H) does not by itself cover all IR(H) knowledge. Cross-credit still depends on the passes remaining valid.

What happens if I fail a paper?

FCL.025 limits each paper to four attempts and the complete set to six sittings and 18 months. If any of those limits is exceeded, the complete set must be retaken after further training determined by the training organisation.

Does a sitting mean one examination day?

No. For these rules a sitting is a 10-day period. Within a CAA timetable session you may select subjects that fit the available session length, but the portal's confirmed dates and booking availability control the actual appointment.

Where should I get the current learning objectives?

Use the current UK CAA regulatory material and ORS9 Decision No. 5 Schedule 1 for detailed learning objectives. CAP 1721 supplies the current accepted paper lengths, totals and subject distribution. Recheck both before relying on a syllabus summary because regulatory publications can be amended.

Why is there no full mock mode?

This aggregate slug represents several papers and three routes with different totals and timings; it is not one fixed exam. A faithful mock must be built for one selected paper and route, and this asset-only module deliberately contains no question bank.
