Consider an alternative explanation or level, weigh practical implications and reach a qualified conclusion no stronger than the evidence.

Turn a psychological question into a testable prediction with measurable variables and an appropriate null or alternative hypothesis.

Key rules

Rule 1

An aim states the purpose of an investigation, while a hypothesis predicts a relationship or difference that can be tested.

Exam cue: Identify the population, variables, predicted direction and exact operational measures.

Rule 2

Operationalisation defines how an abstract construct is manipulated, measured or classified so that the procedure can be replicated.

Exam cue: Use a directional hypothesis only when theory or evidence justifies the predicted direction.

Rule 3

Independent, dependent, extraneous and confounding variables have different roles in the logic and validity of an inference.

Exam cue: Explain how an uncontrolled factor could systematically change the dependent variable.

Common A-level Psychology questions

Is this an official exam-board guide?

No. It is an independent guide based on the DfE common subject content and Ofqual rules for England, checked against current AQA 7182, Pearson 9PS0, Cambridge OCR H567 and H569, and Eduqas A290QS materials.

What is genuinely common across boards?

All routes build psychological knowledge across cognitive, social, developmental, individual-differences and biological areas; compare major approaches; design and evaluate research; handle qualitative and quantitative evidence; use inferential statistics; and apply issues and debates. Exact depth, named studies and paper organisation vary.

Why are the optional research themes not separate topics?

AQA, Pearson, OCR and Eduqas offer different combinations of relationships, development, crime, health, stress, addiction, aggression, environment, sport and other applied content. Splitting these as if they were one national option list would misstate the qualification, so this guide keeps them in one integrated board-selected applications topic.

How should I use the integrated applications topic?

First record the exact choices made by your centre and cohort. For each selected theme, map the required explanation, named evidence, method, application, ethics and debates using your live specification and teacher guidance.

Does 100% examination mean practical research can be ignored?

No. DfE content expects ethical investigative activity, and boards assess the planning, analysis, reporting and evaluation of research in written papers. Eduqas, for example, examines understanding developed through two course investigations even though there is no separately marked NEA.

What changed for AQA cohorts?

AQA retains code 7182 but introduced an updated specification for first teaching in September 2025 and first A-level exams in summer 2027. The previous version had its final A-level examinations in 2026, so learners must use the document for their own cohort.

What is the Cambridge OCR transition?

H567 remains the route for cohorts starting through September 2026 and has its final assessment in June 2028. H569 starts teaching in September 2027 and is first assessed in June 2029. Both retain research methods, core areas and applied psychology, but their paper weighting and selected content differ.

How do the current paper structures differ?

Updated AQA 7182 uses three 2-hour papers weighted equally. Pearson 9PS0 uses two 2-hour-15-minute papers worth 35% each and a 2-hour paper worth 30%. OCR H567 uses three 2-hour papers worth 30%, 35% and 35%, while H569 will use three equally weighted 2-hour papers. Eduqas A290QS uses three equally weighted 2-hour-15-minute papers.

Do all boards require the same inferential tests?

No. The common content requires quantitative and qualitative analysis, including inferential statistics, but specifications differ in named tests, formulae, tables and calculator arrangements. Learn the shared selection logic, then check your board's mathematical appendix.

Are the 601 positions or domain totals official weights?

No. They are transparent internal allocations for this authored practice bank. Only Ofqual requirements and the learner's current board specification define official content and assessment weighting.

Can these multiple-choice questions replace investigations or extended writing?

No. They practise knowledge, application, design decisions, data interpretation and evaluation. They do not complete an Eduqas course investigation, provide practical evidence or demonstrate the sustained reasoning required by an extended response.
