Common A-level Physical Education questions

Is this an official exam-board guide?

No. It is an independent guide based on the DfE subject content and Ofqual requirements for England, checked against the current AQA 7582, Pearson 9PE0, Cambridge OCR H555 and Eduqas A550QS routes.

What does this guide include?

It covers the shared theoretical knowledge, quantitative skills, sporting application, source interpretation and AO1–AO3 written reasoning used for exam preparation. It also explains the transferable logic of performance analysis where that strengthens knowledge application.

What practical content is deliberately excluded?

There are no activity-specific technique lessons, physical drills, coaching sessions, performer assessment grids, filmed-evidence instructions or simulated moderation tasks. Those require real performance, centre supervision and the learner's current board documentation.

Does excluding practical content remove a qualification requirement?

No. The actual A level still requires one practical performance or coaching activity worth 15% and a performance-analysis task worth 15%. This study guide simply does not claim that static knowledge content can reproduce those assessments.

How do the written papers differ by board?

AQA uses two 2-hour papers worth 35% each. Pearson uses a 2-hour-30-minute scientific paper worth 40% and a 2-hour psychological and social paper worth 30%. OCR uses 2-hour, 1-hour and 1-hour papers worth 30%, 20% and 20%. Eduqas uses two 2-hour papers worth 35% each.

What do AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4 mean?

AO1 is knowledge and understanding, AO2 applies that knowledge, and AO3 analyses and evaluates factors underpinning performance and involvement. AO4 covers practical skills and performance analysis and is assessed through the 30% NEA.

Where do quantitative skills appear?

They apply to body-system and energy data, training planning, biomechanical equations and graphs, psychological models, participation statistics and sport analytics. At least 5% of the total A-level marks must assess these skills.

Why are individual sports not separate study modules?

Theoretical principles are applied across sporting contexts, while the permitted activity list and performance criteria govern the separate practical assessment. Splitting every sport into a module would create pure practical material and imply a common technique syllabus that does not exist.

Do the announced OCR and Eduqas withdrawals end the A level?

No. The current notices concern the standalone AS qualifications H155 and B550QS. The A-level routes H555 and A550QS remain listed as current; learners should still check live board notices for their assessment series.

Are the domain totals and 601 positions official weights?

No. They are transparent internal allocations for this theory-practice bank. Only Ofqual requirements and the learner's current awarding-body specification define official weighting and assessment.
