Qualification

Linear A level

The examinations and non-exam production count toward certification at the end of the course.

Assessment

70% exam · 30% NEA

Ofqual fixes this balance; all current routes use two examined components and one cross-media production.

Assessment objectives

AO1 25–35 · AO2 35–45 · AO3 30

AO1 covers framework and contexts, AO2 analysis and theory evaluation, and AO3 the individual production.

Framework

4 connected areas

Media language, representation, media industries and audiences organise the common theoretical core.

Media coverage

9 forms

Television, film, radio, newspapers, magazines, advertising and marketing, online participatory media, video games and music video are all covered.

How to study A-level Media Studies

Control the exact product route first, then use the common framework to analyse, compare, evaluate and create.

1

1. Map products to the framework

Record board, series, components, assigned products, forms, contexts, theories and question types on one control sheet.

2

2. Analyse from evidence outward

Move from a precise visual, aural, verbal, technical or industrial feature to meaning, representation and audience response.

3

3. Test theory and create

Use theory as a claim to evaluate, then apply the framework deliberately to the current cross-media brief.

How to use this guide

How to study A-level Media Studies

Start from precise product evidence, apply the relevant framework and theory, connect context and industry to meaning and reception, then reach a qualified judgement.

1. Frame the task

Identify the product or unseen material, command, framework area, context, theory and comparison required.

2. Select precise evidence

Name the relevant visual, aural, verbal, technical, industrial or audience feature rather than offering general description.

3. Apply and test the framework

Explain how evidence constructs meaning, representation, industrial power or audience relationship, using theory where relevant.

4. Compare and judge

Connect contexts and framework areas, test counter-evidence or theory limits and reach a qualified conclusion.

Route and Set-product Control

Map the exact specification, assessment series, components, assigned products and annual production brief before planning study.

Key rules

Rule 1

AQA, OCR and Eduqas organise products, forms, theories and question types differently within the regulated common content.

Exam cue: Record the awarding body, specification code, assessment series and current product booklet or specification version.

Rule 2

Set products are vehicles for applying the theoretical framework and contexts, not interchangeable titles or isolated fact files.

Exam cue: Map every assigned product to the framework areas and contexts required by that board.

Rule 3

Product lists, episodes, editions, online elements and NEA briefs can change by cohort or assessment series.

Exam cue: Separate a stable theoretical concept from cohort-specific product and platform evidence.

Study it this way

Transferable common core

Learn the framework across every route

Build a single course-control sheet linking each component to its forms, products, framework areas, contexts, theories and question types. Recheck it whenever a board publishes an update.

Apply to assigned products

Keep the current set-product route whole

Enter the exact AQA 7572 CSPs, OCR H409 set products or Eduqas A680QS products chosen by the centre. Keep paired products, specified episodes, editions and online elements together as the board defines them.

Common traps

Using a product list from a different board or assessment year.

Prevention: Do not import a set product, episode, edition, platform feature or NEA brief from another board or assessment series.

Studying one product in isolation from the comparison or form defined by the specification.

Prevention: Do not import a set product, episode, edition, platform feature or NEA brief from another board or assessment series.

Treating product trivia as a substitute for theoretical analysis.

Prevention: Do not import a set product, episode, edition, platform feature or NEA brief from another board or assessment series.

Memory anchors

Route map

A route map records board, code, series, components, assigned products and the current NEA brief.

Set product

A set product is prescribed or selected for applying specified framework areas and contexts.

Assessment series

The assessment series determines which changing product list, edition, episode or brief applies.

Product vehicle

The product is evidence through which framework knowledge is demonstrated, not the whole object of recall.

Version control

Version control means checking the live board specification and secure product material for the cohort.

FAQ

Common A-level Media Studies questions

Is this an official exam-board study guide?

No. It is an independent guide based on the DfE subject content and Ofqual requirements for England, checked against current AQA 7572, OCR H409 and Eduqas A680QS materials.

Why are specified media products not separate modules?

Each board prescribes or permits different products, pairings, episodes, editions, online elements and assessment-year transitions. Splitting product titles into product modules could create an invalid route or detach products from the required comparison. The guide therefore teaches the common framework and keeps each centre's assigned products together.

Does every learner study the same set products?

No. Products differ by board, and some change by cohort or include centre choices. Use the current board specification, secure material and assessment-series product list; do not combine products from different routes.

How do the current board structures differ?

AQA 7572 uses two 2-hour examinations worth 35% each and a 30% cross-media production. OCR H409 likewise uses two 2-hour, 35% components and 30% Making media. Eduqas A680QS uses a 2-hour-15-minute 35% paper, a 2-hour-30-minute 35% paper and a 30% cross-media production.

What product coverage is common to every route?

All nine media forms are covered. At least one audio or audio-visual, one print and one online form is studied in depth through contrasting products and all four framework areas. A-level coverage also includes a pre-1970 product, a non-English-speaking-audience product, a non-mainstream product and one targeting or produced by a minority group.

How often do AQA Close Study Products change?

AQA publishes the cohort's CSP list on 1 June before the course begins, reviews the list annually, updates newspapers every year and refreshes other products periodically. Centres must download the correct booklet for the assessment series.

Which OCR specification is current?

OCR H409 Version 3.0, published in April 2026, is the current A level and includes the current set-product route and AI guidance. Its refreshed products were first taught from 2023 and first assessed in 2025. The withdrawal timetable ending in June 2027 applies to AS H009, not A-level H409.

What Eduqas transition should current cohorts check?

Eduqas A680QS Version 13, dated September 2025, includes product amendments. Its guidance flags further set-product changes for first teaching in 2026 and first assessment in 2028, including updated Component 1 newspaper material. Use the specification issue assigned to the cohort.

Are NEA and AI rules the same every year and across boards?

No. Ofqual requires one individual cross-media response to one awarding-body brief, but forms, tasks, statements, limits, original-material exceptions, supervision, submission and AI rules are board- and year-specific. Check the live brief, specification, cover sheet and current JCQ or board guidance before production.

Are the topic allocations official assessment weights?

No. The seven domain totals and 601 authored practice questions are an internal study design. Only the regulated AO ranges and each current board's component scheme are official.
