Trade Surveillance, Exceptions and Market Conduct
Task 3.2 covers Regulation SHO, large positions, origin codes, order marking, best execution, manipulation, material nonpublic information, customer/proprietary separation, and trading exceptions.
How to study for Series 4
Approach each item as the options principal: identify the account, strategy or activity; calculate the exposure when needed; apply the current rule; and choose the supervisory action that prevents or corrects the risk.
Core concepts
Concept 1
Options surveillance links orders and executions to underlying-security activity, account ownership, order origin, position reports, and communications.
Exam cue: Investigate patterns across related accounts, underlying trades, option series, timing, communications, and beneficial ownership.
Concept 2
Best execution requires reasonable diligence to find the most favorable terms reasonably available, not automatic routing to the venue paying the most.
Exam cue: An unusual profitable trade is a trigger for review, not proof of misconduct by itself.
Concept 3
Manipulation and insider-trading controls apply when options are used to benefit from or influence activity in the underlying security.
Exam cue: Confirm order marking and origin codes from actual position and capacity facts.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Reviewing only the options account when the suspected conduct involves the underlying stock.
Guardrail: Avoid answers that treat disclosure as a waiver, confuse account approval with recommendation approval, bypass principal review, shift losses after the fact, or rely on unsupported guarantees.
Treating a customer order as proprietary to simplify routing or allocation.
Guardrail: Avoid answers that treat disclosure as a waiver, confuse account approval with recommendation approval, bypass principal review, shift losses after the fact, or rely on unsupported guarantees.
Closing an alert solely because no single trade exceeded a reporting threshold.
Guardrail: Avoid answers that treat disclosure as a waiver, confuse account approval with recommendation approval, bypass principal review, shift losses after the fact, or rely on unsupported guarantees.

MNPI
Material nonpublic information controls should restrict trading and information flow before the information becomes public.
Manipulation
Wash trades, matched orders, marking the close, and coordinated activity can create a false or misleading market appearance.
Large Position Report
Reportable options positions require accurate aggregation, ownership, and control information.
Qualified Contingent Cross
A qualified contingent cross must satisfy the exchange's order, pricing, and contingent-trade conditions.
Surveillance Context
Effective review connects option trades with the underlying, related accounts, communications, and market events.
