Options Retail Communications
Task 4.2 covers the definition and types of retail communication, Registered Options Principal approval, FINRA filing, worksheets, projections, risk balance, and required disclosures.
How to study for Series 4
Approach each item as the options principal: identify the account, strategy or activity; calculate the exposure when needed; apply the current rule; and choose the supervisory action that prevents or corrects the risk.
Core concepts
Concept 1
Options retail communications generally require advance approval by a designated Registered Options Principal, except completed worksheets handled under the rule.
Exam cue: Classify the audience and distribution before deciding the approval and filing path.
Concept 2
Communications used before delivery of the current ODD face narrow content limits and can require FINRA approval at least ten calendar days before use.
Exam cue: If the ODD has not preceded the communication, screen out recommendations, specific securities, and performance claims.
Concept 3
Claims about opportunities, returns, expertise, or programs must be supported, fair and balanced, and matched with specific risk information.
Exam cue: A projection needs defined assumptions, relevant costs, risk disclosure, and no suggestion of certainty.
